Iris Ohyama Fresh Rice “Revenge of the Fresh-Rice Faction” (version)Ryo Yoshizawa

Ryo Yoshizawa grins, saying, “I don’t dislike factional infighting,” as Iris Ohyama unveils a new commercial for its Fresh Rice.

This commercial depicts Shojiki Kaname, played by Ryo Yoshizawa, being asked by the executive director for ideas for a packaged rice commercial.

It turns out the executive director is on Team Packaged Rice and is engaged in a factional rivalry with the Fresh Rice camp.

Kaname teases, “You’re getting nervous because fresh rice is selling, aren’t you?” and “First-grade rice is delicious, after all,” highlighting that Iris’s fresh rice is tasty and selling well.

The clever setup—promoting fresh rice through a conversation with the packaged-rice–leaning executive—makes for a memorable ad.

Iris Ohyama Portable Air Conditioner “The Wandering Man” Version

[TVCM] Portable Cooler: The Wandering Man

This commercial, which introduces a portable air conditioner you can use anywhere without installation, is titled “The Wandering Man.” A man carrying an acoustic guitar appears and, to a somewhat wistful melody, talks about the benefits of the portable air conditioner.

Also noteworthy is the characteristically Iris-style surreal humor, such as a small girl getting really into the very cool, mature-sounding song, and a scene near the end where the wandering man gets barked at by a dog.

IRIS OHYAMA daspo “Anytime, Anyone” version

daspo 'Anytime, Anyone' Version

Iris Ohyama Camera-Equipped Refrigerator “Please Don’t Look” VersionRyo Yoshizawa

IRIS OHYAMA Camera-Equipped Refrigerator “Don’t Look” Version, 30 Seconds

A woman appears in front of Shoujiki Kaname, who is in prison, and starts looking through the contents of the refrigerator at his home.

She says, “Oh? You’re even chilling something like this?” Without revealing what’s actually inside, she keeps checking item after item.

Kaname pleads, “Please stop!” and grows increasingly cornered.

You don’t really know why, but the ad creates a mysterious sense of tension and makes you feel like you’re seeing something you shouldn’t.

It’s a surreal and funny commercial.
