What is Jounetsu Tairiku SPECIAL LIVE?

First, let me introduce the Passion Continent SPECIAL LIVE.

PASSION CONTINENTAL SPECIAL LIVE is an outdoor music festival named after the TV program “Passion Continental.”

As you all know, the theme song of Jonetsu Tairiku is by Taro Hakase, and it is through that connection that this event is being held.

It started in 2001.

It was launched by the initiator, Taro Hakase, with the aim of creating a festival not just targeted at young people, but one that people of a wide range of ages can participate in.

Currently, the event is held at two venues, Tokyo and Osaka, but it used to be held in Nagoya and Hokkaido as well.

Here, I’ll briefly introduce how Passion Continent and Taro Hakase first crossed paths.

Jounetsu Tairiku has been broadcast on TBS since 1998 and is a popular program that highlights and introduces people active in a variety of fields.

It all started when Mr. Hakase appeared on Passion Continent and received a request from the program’s producer to compose the theme song.

By the way, there was only a week between receiving the commission and the deadline, and they said on a TV program that they “threw it together as a rush job” (lol).

A wide range of performing artists

Now that we’ve introduced this event, the program Jounetsu Tairiku, and Mr. Hakase, I’d like to highlight the must-see points of Jounetsu Tairiku SPECIAL LIVE from here on.

First, I’d like to highlight the breadth of the lineup and the fact that it features well-known artists that many people are likely familiar with.

As I mentioned at the beginning, since Mr. Hakase started this with the goal of creating a festival that people of a wide range of ages can participate in, I believe this is one of its distinguishing features and attractions.

Looking at past performers, the lineup’s appeal lies in its remarkable breadth—ranging from singer-songwriters to guitarists, rock bands, and even hip-hop artists.

In this context, not only young people but also adults can enjoy the event, as the lineup features artists from a variety of generations, and many artists popular across age groups will also perform.

Of course, Mr. Hagasé performs every year as well, but you’ll also get to see stages you normally wouldn’t—like sessions with this diverse lineup of artists.

Various restaurants and eateries

And when it comes to festivals, the food is definitely one of the main attractions, isn’t it?

At the Passion Continent SPECIAL LIVE, various food and drink vendors set up booths, and among them, Kyoto Kitcho Arashiyama Main Restaurant’s Kitcho Somen is sold each year in a new flavor.

For those who participate every year, isn't looking forward to the new Kitchō Somen varieties one of the highlights?

There are also dishes devised by Mr. Hakase, and many people enjoy them every year.

Among the menus devised by Mr. Hakase, in addition to the rice dishes, the shaved ice series called “Adult Kakigori” is popular every year.

Various flavors of shaved ice have been created over the years, but please try it this year and see for yourself what it’s like.

Somen noodles and shaved ice are both very welcome dishes in hot weather, so they’re highly recommended.
