July, when you can feel summer’s arrival, is a season that makes origami even more fun.
Simple creations like watermelons, morning glories, and stars are easy to make, give young children a strong sense of accomplishment, and serve as a springboard for connecting with the season.
In actual childcare settings, we often saw children proudly showing their work with a big “I did it!” and their eyes sparkling as they said, “I want to make this at home too!” When you paste the finished origami on blue construction paper to represent the sea or the night sky, children’s conversations expand—“There are goldfish too!” “So many stars!” It becomes a wonderful time that nurtures not only the joy of folding but also imagination and expressive skills.

A cut triangular slice of watermelon really feels like summer, doesn’t it? I like it, but my kids surprisingly won’t eat it.
Maybe they’ve figured out it’s actually a member of the vegetable family.
Take an origami sheet that’s been pre-creased and folded into a square, then rotate it so the corner that will be the center is pointing up.
Make a rolled fold on the bottom corner to represent the rind, flip the left and right corners to change the side, then fold the top edge down to meet the center line.
Flip it once more to change the side, tuck the protruding triangle at the bottom inward, and you’re done.
Finish by drawing seeds with a pen.
Penguin Parent and Child You Can Make with a Single Sheet of Origami!NEW!
Penguins on what looks like cold ice can make you feel cool during the hot summer.
A baby penguin peeking out from its parent’s feet is so cute, isn’t it? Let’s fold a parent and child penguin from a single sheet of origami.
As you fold step by step, a small penguin will appear around the adult penguin’s belly.
Some kids might be delighted when the baby penguin appears.
After folding the beak, make eyes with round stickers and attach them.
Be sure to put stickers on the baby penguin too.
Many children love penguins, so they can enjoy making this.
How to fold a cute goldfishNEW!
Prepare two sheets of origami paper and make the head and tail fin separately, then paste them together to complete one goldfish.
For both parts, you first fold the origami into a triangle, so practice aligning the edges neatly so you can fold cleanly.
Opening up the pocketed part and flattening it is a bit tricky, but if you use larger origami paper, you can insert your fingers to open it up, which should make it easier.
Basically, the main tasks are folding back the corners of the triangle and opening and flattening them to form the fins.
For the head, fold the corner into a small triangle to round it out.
Use a pen to draw the eyes and scales to finish it cutely.

On July 7, everyone looks up at the night sky and wonders, “Will they meet this year?”—the Tanabata story.
Orihime and Hikoboshi are the two figures who appear in the tale.
In this craft idea, you basically use two sheets of origami paper to make their heads and bodies.
For the heads, you crease the entire sheet into a grid of squares and align corners and edges to shape them.
For the bodies, you fold the paper into a triangle and, during the folding process, form the torso and use both corners to create the arms.
Have another sheet of origami ready for the sashes and head ornaments.
My child makes these every year and displays them in their room.
It’s fun to level up the difficulty a little each year to match their age.
Easy! How to Fold Star Tanabata StripsNEW!
After folding the origami in half twice to make a square, squash-fold the pocket section into a triangle.
Fold the left side of the front triangle to line up with the center crease, then flip the paper over and do the same.
Next, pull the right corner and swap the left and right sides of the folded edge.
After that, accordion-fold the remaining corners so they form a star shape, and you’re done.
Origami stars come in handy for all sorts of things, so I’ve actually learned and mastered this one myself.
It’s also easy for kids to make, so let’s make a bunch and let your favorite stars twinkle to the fullest!

This firework is made by layering and gluing together four sheets of origami.
The two inner parts are made by doing a double cushion fold twice without flipping the paper.
The outer parts are also made with two cushion folds, but you flip the paper; on the second fold, the key is to fold the corners slightly away from the center.
For the outermost part, turn the two boat corners created during the trick boat process into four squares, then open those into diamonds to form the piece.
After stacking and gluing the three inner sheets, insert them into the remaining outer part, fold the top of the diamond inward, and you’re done.
It isn’t round, but it’s a lovely idea that evokes fireworks in the night sky.
Cute way to fold a summer flower morning glory (origami)NEW!
Lining up the edges when folding origami is easy for adults, but it can be hard for kids, right? My child often asks, “I can’t fold it neatly, so can you do it?” But this idea will still turn into a morning glory even if it isn’t folded perfectly.
Fold the origami into a triangle three times; it’s fine if the edges don’t line up because you’ll cut off the borders anyway.
With the white side of the cut-off origami facing up, fold each of the four corners inward by about 1 cm.
Flip the origami over, then fold the corners created by the previous folds in the same way, and you’re done.
