Make a cut from the base toward the top corner, about halfway.

Open the paper, then fold all sections into triangles from the cut lines toward the corners.

Overlap and glue the triangular sections to form a three-dimensional piece, and make one more identical piece.

Glue the two pieces together slightly offset, and your star is complete.

Make as many as you like and connect them with thread to create a hanging decoration.

It looked like a very intricate star, but the method is surprisingly simple!

Open one of the four flower parts, turn the remaining three inside out, and glue them inside the one you opened.

Attach all four together to complete the kusudama! Finally, attach a streamer made from a different sheet of origami, and you’re done.

It’ll be fun to choose the colors for the kusudama and the designs for the streamers.

Perfect as a little decoration for summer festivals! First, prepare three sheets of construction paper and make a lantern.

Fold one sheet in half and cut slits, leaving a small margin at the edge.

Keeping the fold ridges popped up, paste it onto another sheet of construction paper.

Then roll the entire piece, including the sheet you pasted.

Attach long, thin strips of black construction paper to the top and bottom, and punch two holes at the top—your basic lantern is done! Next, cut white and black construction paper into eye shapes and red construction paper into a tongue shape.

Stick these onto the lantern, and thread a disposable chopstick through the punched holes to complete your lantern ghost! It’s also fun to have each person make one and carry it around while enjoying events like summer festivals at facilities.

Perfect for a little summer gift! Let’s make a “water-balloon-style strap” using the capsules you get from gashapon machines.

First, paint the inside of a clear capsule in any color you like.

Draw patterns on the outside with nail polish, and once it’s dry, thread an elastic cord through the hole and tie it.

Fit the two capsule halves back together to make a sphere, and you’re done! Recommended classic patterns include “polka dots,” “do-re-mi,” and “ripples.” It’s an idea kids will love, and it made me want to try making one too.

This lets you express the obi freely and add individuality.

Flatten the madeleine cups, then make fine cuts with scissors from the rim toward the center.

It’s a good idea to prepare several options in different colors and patterns for people to choose from.

If you want to depict aerial fireworks, try expressing the launch trajectory beneath the burst.

Milk carton lantern

Peel off the printed layer of a milk carton, then glue on torn tissue paper to create your design.

You can cut the tissue paper into any shapes you like, or use translucent stickers instead.

Also—surprisingly—you can design with drain hair-catcher sheets! When you color the hair-catcher sheets, they look like fireworks.

I thought lace paper would work too.

Once you finish the design, close the top, put a light inside, and you’re done.

Try using an LED light from a 100-yen shop.
