I can’t decide what to sing for the first karaoke song! Great songs to start with
Last updated:

You probably have plenty of chances to go to karaoke with friends or coworkers, but have you ever struggled to pick that first song to sing? Here are three key tips for choosing songs that will warm up the room and keep things fun all the way through.

What are good songs to sing first at karaoke?

I can’t decide what to sing for the first karaoke song! Great songs to start withFor the first song at karaoke, it’s generally best to choose something that lifts the mood.

Many people get stuck deciding what to pick for the first song when they go to karaoke.

When you sing the first song, your excitement hasn’t built up yet and you haven’t gotten a feel for your voice, so many people find it hard to choose the right track.

Even so, here are three songs that are good to choose as the first track in karaoke.

1.

bright song

2.

an upbeat song

3.

A song I'm good at but not attached to

Now, let’s take a closer look at the reasons.

 1.

bright song

As one of the good choices for the first song at karaoke, it’s best to pick an upbeat, cheerful song to lift the mood.

When you’ve just gotten into the karaoke room, the mood/energy isn’t up yet.

To boost my own mood and the energy of those around me, the idea is to sing upbeat songs to raise the excitement level.

Conversely, if you start off by choosing and singing a ballad, it will slow down how quickly your mood picks up, so I don’t recommend it.

It might be different for people who say, “Singing ballads lifts my mood!”, but for most people, singing or listening to upbeat songs gradually raises their energy level.

Solo karaoke is a different story, but if you go to karaoke with a group and sing as if “it’s fine as long as I’m the only one having fun,” your relationships will become strained. If you understand what helps people feel happy and energized, it will be easier to make the karaoke session enjoyable for everyone.

What people perceive as a “bright” song can subtly differ from person to person. So it’s a good idea to look into which songs are widely recognized as bright, pick ones you can sing, practice them, and use one as your first song at karaoke.

Mood has a major impact on whether you can sing well or not.

Once you learn to control your own energy and mood, it becomes easier to demonstrate your abilities in a variety of situations—not just in singing.

Analyze your personality quirks and the like, and skillfully get through the situation.

2.

an upbeat song

As a good song to sing first at karaoke, one way to quickly raise the energy is to choose and sing an upbeat, catchy track.

Many people who like karaoke start by singing an upbeat song.

Upbeat songs often have very fast tempos and such, so they can be hard to sing as the first song.

Instead, the energy in the room suddenly rises, making it easier to sing the songs that follow.

For sports and the like, you first do things like stretching to get your body ready to move before you begin.

It's the same with singing: if you start by singing a song that boosts your mood, it becomes easier to get energized—not so much physically as mentally.

No matter how much you loosen and relax your body, if your mind is dark and heavy, it becomes difficult to sing joyfully or freely.

You can sing your best when your heart and body are ready to sing.

Rather than trying to sing well, start by choosing an upbeat song to lift your spirits.

3.

A song I'm good at but not attached to

A good choice for your first karaoke song is one you’re good at but not attached to, so you don’t trick yourself into thinking your voice is in bad shape today.

When they go to karaoke, some people might start with their signature song to get themselves pumped up.

However, when it comes to the first song at karaoke, most people have only just started singing and aren’t really hyped up yet, so many of them can’t project their voices well.

It might be different if you do vocal warm-ups before singing, but unless you have a professional mindset, most people don’t do vocal exercises before singing at karaoke.

People who sing without doing vocal warm-ups will find it easier to start with a song they’re good at but not overly attached to.

The reason is that if I put a song I’m not very good at as the first one, not being able to sing that first song well makes my mind start to think, “Maybe my voice isn’t in good shape today,” and as a result I sometimes end up not being able to enjoy karaoke for the whole day.

People who don’t get better at singing will, when they can’t sing well, say things like “My throat isn’t in good condition today” or “I’m not feeling well,” and when they can sing well, they’ll say “I’m in great shape today!”

I don’t know how to sing well, so my performance varies a lot from moment to moment, and there are few times when I feel like I’m in good form.

People who are good at singing don’t often say things like, “My throat isn’t in good condition today.”

I regularly take care of my vocal condition and I know how to sing in a way that’s easy on my voice, so it basically never happens that I’m in poor shape every time I go to karaoke.

Because it’s the first song, even if I know I can’t sing it that well, once I convince myself, “I can’t sing it well!” it becomes difficult to shake off that belief and sing well within the same day.

Therefore, it’s better not to include songs that you won’t be able to sing well from the start.

Why is it better not to put your signature song first? Even though your signature song is one you can sing well, your voice isn’t at full strength on the first number.

A song you’re good at is one you’re deeply attached to precisely because you love it.

Compared to other songs, while I can usually sing it well, it also has the characteristic that when I can't sing it well, the shock is that much greater.

I don’t mind much if I can’t sing songs I’m not good at very well, but if I fail to sing a song I consider myself good at, I sometimes get totally deflated, thinking, “It’s a song I’m good at and have sung so many times—why can’t I sing it well?!”

To avoid situations like this, I think it’s good to start by including a piece you’re relatively good at but not too attached to.

To make sure you can sing comfortably at karaoke that day, I recommend figuring out what song you should put in as your first track.

Summary

For the first song at karaoke, if you want to lift the mood, choose a bright, upbeat track; if you want to crank up the energy all at once, go for something with a strong, catchy rhythm.

It can also be a good idea to sing a song you’re good at but not attached to, so you don’t create the illusion that your throat is in bad shape today.

The first song at karaoke can be hard to choose—so much so that some people can’t decide what to pick and end up spending a few minutes agonizing over it.

However, once you know what kind of song to sing first to get into the groove, you won’t have to worry anymore.

It’s a good idea to look for the song that helps you get into the best groove when you sing it first.
