The allure of the big-city rock fest, METROPOLITAN ROCK FESTIVAL (Metrock)
METROCK, short for METROPOLITAN ROCK FESTIVAL, is an outdoor festival that has been held since 2013.
Year by year it has drawn increasing attention from rock festival fans, and it’s now held at two venues in Tokyo and Osaka.
Here, we’ll share the appeal of METROCK, a festival that’s really gaining momentum.

First, I'd like to briefly introduce what METROCK is and give an overview of the festival.
METROCK is a relatively new event that has been held since 2013.
However, in past editions, more than 30,000 people attended each year, and in 2017, the Tokyo and Osaka venues each held two days of events.80,000 attendees over a total of 4 daysIt is setting records and steadily gaining more and more fans.
METROCK was originally held only in Tokyo, butThere are still many people across the country who are eagerly waiting for Metrock. And so, it was decided that starting in 2016, it would also be held in Osaka.
First, there will be two days of performances in Osaka in the first week, followed by two days of performances in Tokyo the following week.
Most of the performers appear in both the Tokyo and Osaka shows, making METROCK effectively held twice—east and west—so fans across the country can enjoy it.
There are three stages at the venue, and live performances will take place on each of them in sequence.
alsoBehind the main stage of the Tokyo venue, the WINDMILL FIELD stage, stands a large windmill—truly breathtaking. That's right.
What does “METROPOLITAN” mean?
By the way, what does “metropolitan” mean in the first place?
When I look it up in an English-Japanese dictionary, METROPOLITAN is defined as “of the big cityIt’s an adjective that means “~.”
For this METROCK venue, the Tokyo performance isShin-Kiba Wakasu Park…the Osaka performance isSakai City’s Sea Interaction ParkandBoth are about 30 minutes from the city center. It is (described/defined) as such.
Since it’s a rock festival held at a venue in the city, it’s called the METROPOLITAN ROCK FESTIVAL, isn’t it?
The appeal of the METROPOLITAN ROCK FESTIVAL
From here, I’d like to introduce the appeal of METROCK by focusing on three key points.
A lineup full of popular stars

First and foremost, I want to convey how impressive the lineup is.
It’s not the same kind of extravagance as having overseas artists perform like at Summer Sonic or Fuji Rock, but…One of its appeals is that many artists who are especially popular among young people in Japan are performing.。
With festival regulars, buzzworthy up-and-coming artists who’ve been gaining popularity lately, and even veteran rock acts on the bill, the lineup is irresistible for music lovers every time.
Additionally, with both male and female idols included in the lineup, it’s easy to see why METROCK draws such large crowds.
In 2017, a Johnny’s group appeared, and it became a big topic of conversation.
Anyway, it’s a lineup so full of popular stars that it makes you want to watch everything!
Well-equipped food and drink booths and an eco area
At METROCK, just like other outdoor festivals, you can enjoy festival food.
There are more than 20 vendors, offering a wide variety of local specialties from across Japan as well as dishes from around the world.
“You can’t enjoy a live show on an empty stomach!” So fill up and enjoy the concert to the fullest.
Additionally, there’s one more thing I’d like everyone to pay attention to.Eco AreaIt’s a booth named …
There will be various booths, including workshops that use materials created through reuse, reduce, and recycle under the eco theme, as well as shops run by organizations that support children overseas and exhibits about their activities.
Rather than leaving the festival with just the impression that it was fun, I hope people can take home a spark of interest in activities that will benefit their future or help others.
Of course, the most important thing is that you feel it was fun, so first and foremost, let’s enjoy the live show to the fullest.
The venue has a lawn.

The last point is that the ground at the venue is grass.
It seems that both the Tokyo and Osaka venues have lawns.
Having grass on the ground might be challenging from a venue management perspective, but from a participant’s viewpoint, it’s really appreciated, isn’t it?
During the live show I might be jumping, sometimes running around, and maybe even diving onto the crowd... If the ground is dirt at that time, things like dust and mud on shoes can be a concern!
But with grass you don’t have to worry about dirt, and it’s soft and comfy to sit on, isn’t it?
By the way, dangerous actions such as moshing and stage diving are prohibited, so absolutely do not do them.
Event Overview
Lastly
How was it?
Have you gotten a sense of the appeal of METROCK—held in metropolitan, in other words urban, areas?
I think the biggest appeal of METROCK is that you can see a whole lot of popular artists.
If the currently announced artists strike a chord with you, why not decide to join right away?
