The festival hosted by Katayama Breakers, 'MIYAKO!! Monster Renaissance 2017,' will heat up Kyoto’s winter!
Last updated:

In the winter of 2017, a new rock festival was born in Kyoto.

On both December 2 (Sat) and 3 (Sun), 2017, “Miyako!! Monster Renaissance,” hosted by Katayama Breakers & The☆Rokenroll Party, will be held at Kyoto KBS Hall.

In addition to Katayama Breakers, who will perform on both days, nearly 30 compelling acts are lined up, including KING BROTHERS, Kuritorikku-Risu (Clitoricris), Village Man’s Store, Yellow Studs, Souonji, and Akippara ni Sake.

From among them, we’ll highlight some recommended performers.

First up is the host, Katayama Breakers & The☆Rokenroll Party.

Formed in 2000.

A band based in Kyoto that continues to perform energetically.

The eponymous song “Monster Renaissance,” which serves as the festival’s theme song.

It’s a straightforward, hard-hitting rock tune.

The realism of the zombie makeup in the music video is amazing.

A byword for Kyoto’s signature rock band.

A band with fans across generations, boasting over 20 years of activity and continuing to perform at the forefront.

Vocalist Nabe’s crowd-whipping stage presence and guitarist Tam’s razor-sharp guitar will hook you after just one listen.

A one-man techno unit by Sugimu that rampages through festivals all across Japan.

No matter when or at which festival, the live show gets as hyped as a full-on riot.

With a shaved head and nothing but my underwear, I hype up the crowd with lyrics that make you cry and laugh.

This song is an homage to The Blue Hearts' 'Train-Train.'

They are one of the leading bands in line for the next breakthrough on the Kyoto indie scene.

As the so-called “only surviving adventure rock band,” they call their live shows “camp,” dress everyone in Boy Scout fashion, and swing around mess tins and rice paddles.

They're a comic band, but their musicianship is excellent, and although they're a comic band, all the members are handsome.

A band based in Osaka, active since 2007.

Funk meets hip-hop!?

Over the cutting guitar and growling bass, vocalist Tanaka rampages across the stage, riling up the crowd with his vocals.

It's danceable music that blends edgy coolness with a friendly, approachable vibe.

They are a garage punk band representing western Japan, described as “Michelle in the East, Kimbra in the West.”

A one-of-a-kind band that shows you what true cool really is, letting you revel in overwhelming sonic power and a breathtaking stage presence.

The guitarist is Maya, formerly of Shukugawa Boys.

VILLAGE MAN'S STORE

On the verge of a major debut!? A breakout is inevitable!?

Right now, the band attracting the most attention among hardcore rock fans is Village Man’s Store.

Enjoy genuine, powerful rock ’n’ roll that defies trends, driven by vocalist Gii Mizuno’s high-tone voice and the band members’ exceptional musicianship.

Happy End × Suchmos + Taifu Club?

Formed in 2017, they are a rising star from Kyoto who, after just three months, even performed at Rising Sun 2017.

With their melodies, sound design, refined Japanese sensibility, and deep musical background, this is a band with the potential to make music enthusiasts jump at the chance.

A band based in Osaka’s America-mura that’s going strong and actively performing.

We organize the circuit festival “Amemura Heaven.”

It feels like a bunch of musically talented members have come together and are messing around doing whatever they want, and watching their live shows puts me in a joyful mood.

Their performance skills are top-notch and the songs are insanely cool, but the moment they start the MC, the vibe suddenly loosens up and you can sometimes feel like you’ve just dropped by a friend’s room.

In conclusion

This festival uses a two-stage format: the main venue’s “Miyako Stage,” and the underground venue’s two stages—the “Atarayo Stage” (Day 2) and the “Janjarā Stage” (Day 3).

I couldn’t introduce them all, but “Miyako!! Monster Renaissance 2017” also features nothing but other captivating bands.

It looks like there will be food stalls and other shops, so it seems we can enjoy ourselves plenty from lunchtime until the end.
