Incidentally, Richie Hawtin is also a huge fan of sake—he launched the ENTER.

The Irresistible Force is an ambient project by British ambient DJ/producer Mixmaster Morris.

Some of you may remember the buzz when a new album—his first in roughly 19 years—was released in 2017.

The track featured here, Sky High, appears on his landmark debut album Flying High, released in 1992.

With a sound that feels like a prototype of ambient techno, it blends elements of house and IDM, maintaining a psychedelic atmosphere while remaining refined and chill.

Liquid Insects – Amorphous Androgynous (Future Sound of London)

The Future Sound of London, pioneers of electronic music from the UK, have released works under various names in pursuit of the possibilities of electronic sound, boasting an extensive discography.

Their presence is also significant in the history of ambient techno, with 1994’s Lifeforms—incorporating ambient elements—being particularly famous.

Another celebrated work is 1993’s Tales of Ephidrina, released under their Amorphous Androgynous alias, widely regarded as a classic of ambient techno.

The track introduced here, Liquid Insects, appears on that album and was also issued as a 12-inch single.

With a sound that sits between progressive house and ambient techno, it’s a fascinating listen for anyone interested in the early ’90s dance music landscape.

Kelly Lee Owens – Night

Kelly Lee Owens, a Welsh artist who has earned high acclaim for distilling a variety of genres—such as minimal and dream pop—into her own unique sonic world while evoking the influence of ambient techno.

Her sound rings out freely both on dance floors dominated by club music and as contemporary indie rock or bedroom pop, drawing significant attention as a new musical force since the 2010s.

The piece featured here is Night, a standout track from her second album Inner Song, released in 2020—highly recommended for fans of ambient techno within her intriguingly multifaceted sound.

Of course, it’s a must-listen not only for those who enjoy Aphex Twin’s ambient techno, but also for music lovers who cherish bands like Cocteau Twins.

DeltaHigher Intelligence Agency

Artificial Intelligence, the essential compilation series released by the prestigious label Warp in the 1990s, is indispensable for understanding the IDM and ambient techno landscape of the time.

Featured as the second track on the series’ final installment, 1994’s Artificial Intelligence II, is Higher Intelligence Agency, the ambient project of Birmingham-based artist Bobby Bird.

Their debut album, Colourform, released in 1993 under the name The Higher Intelligence Agency, is a gem that has achieved legendary status as a masterpiece of ambient and dub techno.

SpreewaldSun Electric

Sun Electric – Spreewald

Sun Electric, hailing from Berlin, Germany, are a celebrated group that, while somewhat under the radar, released high-quality works in the 1990s across genres like IDM and ambient techno.

One of its members, Max Loderbauer, is also known as a member of the Moritz von Oswald Trio led by the Basic Channel co-founder, and he has continued to be a mainstay of the electronic music scene—among other things, unveiling the ambitious project RE:ECM with Chilean minimal techno genius Ricardo Villalobos, in which they reconstructed recordings from the ECM label.

Sun Electric’s signature release and widely acclaimed classic Present from 1996 is a crucial album in the history of ’90s ambient techno.

Just listen to the opening masterpiece, Spreewald, and you’ll grasp the appeal of their sound: a subtly melancholic blend that weaves breakbeats, dub, jungle, and downtempo into ambient techno, all crafted with the sleek rigor and earnest precision characteristic of German artists.

CascadeFuture Sound of London

Cascade

Future Sound of London, the British duo hailed as pioneers of electronic music.

While repeatedly embarking on various musical adventures, they’ve also released commercial hits, and even well into the 2020s they remain highly active veterans.

Their musical style has shifted with the times and is hard to pin down, but the classic often cited as showcasing their ambient side is the 1994 release Lifeforms.

The album’s Disc 1 opens with Cascade, a track that had been released the previous year as a single and became a hit.

It unfolds an experimental, ambient sound world that seems to transport you to another realm just by listening.
