There are times when you want to find “songs that start with a certain hiragana,” like for “shiritori karaoke,” where you link songs together like the word game shiritori, “song-title shiritori,” where you restrict yourself to track titles, or even when making a playlist themed around the 50 Japanese syllables.

NMB48 is a group based at their exclusive theater, “NMB48 Theater,” located in Namba, Osaka City, and they are active mainly in the Kinki region.

Including former members, many are from Osaka Prefecture, such as Nagisa Shibuya, Miru Shiroma, Mao Mita, Sae Murase, Fuko Yagura, Sayaka Yamamoto, and Akari Yoshida.

This song was released in 2013 as their seventh single, with Sayaka Yamamoto serving as the center.

It’s a classic idol song that’s filled with the feeling of summer.

Released in 2017 as NMB48’s 16th single.

With Sayaka Yamamoto in the center position, it’s a hard-hitting, acrobatic dance number.

Rap was used for the first time, resulting in a cool track that goes beyond the usual boundaries of idol songs.

VostokNRQ

A four-piece instrumental band featuring a rich array of instruments, including kokyu, mandolin, and wind instruments.

This track brings in a guest steelpan player to craft a fresh funk sound.

The silky, gentle tone of the kokyu, joined by the charming steelpan, and topped with stylish guitar cutting, meld into a blend of elegance and groove—like savoring almond tofu.

BogNothing’s Carved In Stone

This is a track included on the 5th album, REVOLT.

It’s a memorable video where vocalist Muramatsu takes the lead on vocals and hypes up the crowd.

The song is synced with the currently popular programmed sounds, leaving an impression that it strays a bit from rock.

Personally, I couldn’t hide my surprise seeing guitarist Ubukata playing a Flying V instead of his ES-335 in this one.

ONE OK ROCK enjoys tremendous popularity even overseas.

This song has a classic straight-ahead, up-and-down rhythm that really gets the crowd going, and at live shows there are moments when the entire venue jumps in unison.

It’s a mid-tempo track you can also enjoy by headbanging, so feel free to get into it in your own way.

In ONE OK ROCK’s albums, the final track often contains many hidden segments.

After a few minutes of silence, each member sings, shouts, or talks about things they like.

The contrast with their usual pursuit of pure rock is striking, making it an irresistible track for fans.

When it comes to three-piece girl bands, Shonen Knife often comes to mind, but there was another trio active around the same time.

Formed in 1981, OXZ was a post-punk band based in Osaka and Kyoto.

In stark contrast to Shonen Knife, they were defined by an underground sensibility and a downer worldview.

It’s true that their primitive playing could be technically rough, but their dark sound—akin to the positive-punk of the era—and lyrics steeped in a unique poetic mood are genuinely compelling and cool.

I especially want Western music fans to know that a girl band like them existed in the 1980s.

In February 2020, the venerable US indie label Captured Tracks released Along Ago: 1981–1989, compiling eight years of their work!
