Cat songs that overlap with various emotions. A richly diverse collection of cat tunes.

February 22 is known as Cat Day!

In Japan, it was established in 1987.

Cats can be delightfully free-spirited—keeping their distance one moment, then suddenly getting affectionate the next.

There are many songs that sing about or relate to “cats,” and many people might feel that there are quite a few classics among them.

From heart-fluttering cute tunes to songs that express a cat’s feelings, wishes like “I want to be a cat,” and moving tracks that overlay human emotions with feline traits—there are countless cat-themed songs.

In this article, we’ve picked out our top recommendations among cat songs.

If you’re a cat lover who actually has a feline friend, be sure to listen together and enjoy a happy time!

Meowth’s PartyMeowth (Inuko Inuyama)

Meowth's Party - Inuko Inuyama, Megumi Hayashibara, Shin-ichiro Miki
Meowth’s Party Meowth (Inuko Inuyama)

This is the ending song sung by Meowth, the “monster cat” Pokémon that appears in the anime Pokémon.

Other Pokémon endings sung by Meowth include “Meowth’s Song” and “Meowth’s Ballad,” but I think the most lively and fun one is the party.

I'm Doraemon.Nobuyo Ōyama, Korogi ’73

[KameKore Op.02] I’m Doraemon – Chameleon Music Corps
I’m Doraemon Nobuyo Ōyama, Korogi '73

It’s not a raccoon dog; it’s a cat-type robot.

This is the theme song of Doraemon, one of Japan’s most iconic anime characters, who also appeared in the preview video for the Tokyo Olympics during the closing ceremony of the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Although this version was used before the voice actors were replaced, many people probably still find this one more memorable.

This song is included on the 17th solo album, Portrait of a Family, released on July 25, 1991.

It is said to be a song dedicated to a cousin who passed away at a young age.

The male chorus gives the track a nostalgic feel reminiscent of 1970s American music.

I Stepped on the CatTenchi Fusa, Tokyo Broadcasting Children’s Choir

Although it is known worldwide, its composer remains unknown, and depending on the country it’s a song about a dog, a monkey, or a donkey.

You might not be able to play the piano, yet somehow you can blaze through just this piece with dazzling virtuosity—this is perhaps the most famous cat song in Japan.

The lyrics by Hiroo Sakata, who was also a children’s literature author, were used on the program “Minna no Uta.”

Sorry, dog.Wa-Suta

Wasuta (The World Standard) - “Sorry, dog.”
Sorry, dog. Wa-Suta.

It’s a charming, warm, and humorous story themed around the relationship between a cat and a dog.

Through the daily life of an elderly woman and her two pets, it gently conveys the importance of caring for one another.

Though they sometimes play mean tricks on each other, the way they ultimately come to accept one another is heartwarming.

The affectionate nature of the dog and the cat’s reluctance to be honest are depicted in perfect balance.

Released in February 2023 as Wasuta’s 10th single, it was also used in a vocational school commercial.

It’s a recommended track not only for pet owners but also for anyone struggling with an important relationship.

NyaNyaNyaNyaNyadaniwell

This is a Hatsune Miku song released in 2012.

Does it sound like an instrumental to you? She’s actually singing—just endlessly “NyaNyaNyaNyaNya.” If a human tried to sing it precisely at karaoke, their jaw and tongue would probably go out of whack.
