[Chic BGM] A Curated Selection of Stylish Classics to Color Your Everyday Life (21–30)

On My MamaVictoria Monét

A message of powerful self-affirmation that stirs your heart without you even realizing it! This is a track by singer-songwriter Victoria Monét from California.

Written “as if speaking words to herself” during the challenging postpartum period, the song overflows with positive energy that boosts listeners’ self-esteem.

Its memorable hook—sampling a 2009 track—and triumphant horns feel great and seem like they could blow away the languor of summer.

Released in June 2023 and included on the acclaimed album Jaguar II, the song became her first top-40 entry on the Billboard Hot 100.

Why not charge up your energy by listening on a summer drive or on a morning when you want to lift your mood?

New FictionLittle Dragon

A four-piece Swedish band fronted by Japanese-Swedish vocalist Yukimi Nagano.

Their activities extend far beyond their home country; with Grammy nominations and collaborations with numerous major artists, they’ve achieved worldwide popularity and recognition.

This track is included on their album “New Me, Same Us,” released in March 2020, by a group that now reigns as one of Sweden’s leading bands.

Yukimi’s instantly recognizable, mysteriously alluring voice floats through the space, while a genre-defying soundscape built with live instruments invites listeners into a dreamlike world.

Be sure to check out the lyrics—preferably with a translated version—to explore the message woven into the song.

Spring Is HereBill Evans

Spring Is Here (Album Version)
Spring Is HereBill Evans

Like weaving pale light, the delicate tones spun from the piano by American pianist Bill Evans sink deep into the heart.

Recorded in New York in December 1959 and included on the album “Portrait in Jazz,” this piece beautifully captures both the joy of spring’s arrival and the fragile feelings that, for some reason, keep one from embracing that joy straightforwardly.

The conversational interplay of Scott LaFaro’s bass and Paul Motian’s drums renders loneliness and the pain of heartbreak with even greater depth.

It’s a track to savor in a quiet room at the turn of the seasons, when spring’s light and shadow intersect.

A gem of a performance recommended for those who wish to touch the subtleties of life.

Midnight In A Perfect WorldDj Shadow

A pioneering figure in the genres known as trip-hop and abstract hip-hop—and a renowned hardcore record collector—DJ Shadow has continued to exert a profound influence on later musicians through his turntable- and sampler-driven methods.

This track appears on his first solo album, the historic masterpiece Endtroducing released in 1996.

Melancholy-tinged vocal samples, a hard-hitting drum beat, and weighty strings coalesce in perfect balance, forming a piece of music that is both deeply melancholic and exquisitely beautiful.

An immortal classic that never fades with time, offering fresh discoveries every time you listen.

When we say BGM, it’s not just about rhythmic instrumental tracks—you also want mellow tunes with a relaxed mood that make you move gently, right? If you’re looking for music like that, I recommend WONK’s “Orange Mug.” It uses a boom-bap-style beat reminiscent of overseas R&B and ’90s hip-hop, and just listening to it makes you want to move your body.

It’s dance music you’ll want to play at night.

I think the intentionally low-budget feel of the music video actually creates a stylish vibe.

PURPLEillmore

A beatmaker affiliated with the Tokyo-based label Chilly Source, he continues to work out of Oita.

His multifaceted talents shine in many areas, from composing music for apparel brand commercials and providing tracks to other artists, to making the finals two years in a row at Japan’s largest track/beat-making competition, BEAT GRAND PRIX.

His 2018 release, PURPLE, is a quintessential illmore track—brimming with contemporary sophistication and uninhibited playfulness, it’s the kind of tune that might make you feel like you’re tripping just by listening.

The SeaMorcheeba

A UK band featuring the lone female vocalist Skye Edwards, with the peculiar, distinctive name “Morcheeba.” Their 1996 debut album, Who Can You Trust?, was hailed alongside the likes of Portishead, with their live-band trip-hop sound earning high praise.

From the 2000s onward, they would go on to develop a sound that transcended the boundaries of trip-hop, but here I’ll introduce the opening track from their second album, Big Calm, released in 1998.

Centered on the airy, floating trip-hop characteristic of their early period, the deftly arranged ensemble of live instruments carries a touch of psychedelia, while the languid vocals draw the listener into another world.
