Recommended Japanese bands with female vocals

Bands with female vocalists are wonderful—not just for their singing, but also for the expressiveness they bring to the music, lyrics, and every aspect of their performance, in ways only women can.

For that reason, I think many people are looking for recommendations of bands with female vocalists.

In this article, I’ll introduce some great bands with female singers! I’ve picked a wide range—from cool, hard-rocking bands that can hold their own against any male act, to groups known for their beauty and elegance.

Let’s dive right in!

From around the late 2000s, SHAKALABBITS enjoyed considerable popularity as a ska-punk band.

With their cute looks and songs that were both adorable and cool, they became a band many female rock fans admired.

Vocalist UKI also had such influence that she became a fashion trendsetter.

And of course, their work is outstanding.

Mushroom Hotel of Wanting to Burn Out

Kinoco Hotel is a girls’ band formed around keyboardist and vocalist Marianne Shinonome.

With the concept of “pop, radical, and highly addictive popular music,” they’ve released many songs with a slightly retro vibe.

The vocalist’s singing style is reminiscent of Showa-era kayōkyoku, and listening to it can make you feel as if you’ve time-traveled.

Summer IllusionGARNET CROW

GARNET CROW is a band famous for tie-ups with anime and games.

From their debut until their disbandment in 2013, they left behind a wealth of songs.

Although vocalist Yuri Nakamura’s voice isn’t flashy, it’s striking and pleasant to listen to.

With many mid-tempo tracks featuring intense sounds, they’re a rock band whose songs are generally very approachable.

Summer Festival JITTERIN'JINN

JITTERIN’JINN is a band that broke through thanks to the hit late-1980s music show “Miyake Yūji no Ikasu Band Tengoku.” In 2000, their song “Natsu Matsuri” was covered by Whiteberry and became a big hit, bringing them recognition among younger generations as well.

Their appeal lies in a musical style that blends punk rock with Okinawan folk songs.

AliA was formed in July 2018 at the invitation of EREN, the band’s leader and guitarist.

Everything about them is cool—the dancing tones of the keyboards, the energetic instrumentalists, and AYAME’s vocals! The layered harmonies in particular really hit home and make you want to play their songs on repeat.

From their early days, their sound has been produced by Satoru Hiraide, known for working with UVERworld and Kavka Shishido, so while they’re rock, they’re also melodic and accessible for listeners who like a pop sensibility.

In 2020, they even scheduled a world tour, drawing attention not just in Japan but overseas as well.

They’re a band you’ll want to keep an eye on!

When it comes to modern female-fronted bands, you can’t talk about the scene without mentioning tricot! These days they’re not only playing festivals across Japan but also actively performing overseas.

Their biggest appeal is, without a doubt, their songs packed with odd time signatures! But they’re not just tricky tracks for hardcore fans—they’re also super catchy and get you moving! They’re a tough band to cover, but giving it a try will definitely help you level up!

[Official Music Video] Togenasitogeari “Daremo” – Anime “Girls Band Cry”
Daremo to Genashi to Geari

Togenashi Togeari is gaining attention as a new kind of girls’ band that fuses anime and reality.

Formed through the “Girl’s Rock Audition” held in June 2021, they’re known for a powerful sound rooted in emotional rock.

After releasing their debut single in May 2023, they performed the theme song for the original anime Girls Band Cry.

While also voicing the anime’s characters, they released their first album, “Toge Ari,” earning praise for their musicality.

Their collaboration with agehasprings on songwriting and their performance style—where each of the five members’ individuality shines—has won over many fans.

Their fifth solo concert at Pacifico Yokohama in February 2025 was a huge success.

Highly recommended not only for anime fans but also for music listeners seeking authentic girls’ band sounds.
