ultramarineComposed by Miki Oda

Gunjou [Mixed Chorus, Four-Part Version]
Ultramarine Composed by: Miki Oda

This choral piece was created with the cooperation of students from Minamisoma City elementary and junior high schools in Fukushima Prefecture and their teacher, Miki Oda.

It expresses feelings for friends who have been scattered across the country and the hope of being able to reunite in their hometown.

The scenes of looking back on the many memories shared with friends and the desire to send their wishes far away are particularly striking.

The realization that the ordinary, unremarkable days they spent were the true source of happiness makes it a moving piece perfectly suited for graduation ceremonies.

It is a song that conveys the strength of the bonds forged in their hometown, extending beyond just friendships.

Growing UpppLyrics: Kankuro Kudo / Music: Gen Hoshino

This song is used in NHK’s program for 4- to 6-year-olds, “Miitsuketa!” with lyrics by Kankuro Kudo and music by Gen Hoshino—an outstanding duo.

It portrays children’s growth from a perspective that’s uniquely Kudo’s.

It might be a bit difficult for kids to sing, but since it’s a well-known song, it should really liven things up!

ultramarineLyrics: 2012 Graduating Class of Odaka Junior High School, Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture / Music: Miki Oda

Here is a moving song perfect for graduation ceremonies.

It is a choral piece filled with the feelings of students who lived through the Great East Japan Earthquake and the nuclear accident.

The lyrics were written by the 2012–2013 graduating class of Odaka High School in Minamisoma, Fukushima Prefecture, and the music was composed by Miki Oda.

Completed in February 2013, it premiered that March at a concert supporting recovery from the earthquake.

Since then, it has spread nationwide and was featured on the TV program “24-Hour Television” in August 2014.

The song carries thoughts for friends far away, memories of days spent together, and hopes for the future.

Its soul-stirring piano melody and lyrics that inspire the courage to face forward are sure to encourage graduates as they take their next steps.

Mariko Kurata / Graduation (1979)
Graduation Mariko Kurata

After retiring, singer Mariko Kurata has worked as a career counselor and, since 2015, has served as a specially appointed professor at Tokyo Gakugei University.

Her single “Graduation,” released on January 21, 1979, opens with a sentimental intro featuring a lyrical guitar riff and clear, shimmering strings.

The lyrics, which celebrate a friendship that remains unchanged even after a fresh start, may bring back the bittersweet feelings of a graduation ceremony.

With a chorus that truly stirs the heart, it’s a graduation song loved across generations.

GraduationHikaru Genji

The B-side of Hikaru GENJI’s second single “Garasu no Jūdai,” released in 1987.

This song is about graduation, and it has actually been sung at schools as a graduation song.

It’s also frequently covered at Johnny’s Jr.

concerts and the like.

It embraces the loneliness and anxiety felt at graduation ceremonies and gives you a push to leap into a new world.

Although it’s a hit from the ’80s, I think it’s a song that would still leave a lasting impression if sung at a modern graduation ceremony.

Ultramarine DaysTogisada Tsuishiki (Tokyo Jihen)

Toshiki Hata, the drummer of Tokyo Jihen, nicknamed Tosshī.

His slightly bad-boy vibe is also undeniably cool.

He started out as a studio musician and has performed on numerous tours, including with Mika Nakashima.

Influenced by his father, a taiko drummer, he has been familiar with taiko since childhood—his skill is extraordinary.

Being left-handed, he uses a unique setup that produces flurries of notes and a tricky style.

He has been a member supporting Tokyo Jihen since its formative days.

Yuko Hara – Gudetama March (Full ver.)
Gudetama March Haru Yuko

Yuko Hara, known as the keyboardist of Southern All Stars and as a singer-songwriter with charmingly cute backing vocals, has released her fourth original album, Portrait of a Lady, her first original album in 31 years.

The track Gudetama March, just as its title suggests, serves as the theme song for the Netflix live-action series Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure.

With its easy-to-remember, laid-back melody, it should be comfortable to sing at karaoke.

However, since the overall key is high, try adjusting it to a key that suits your voice and practice accordingly.
