[K-On!] Songs by Ho-kago Tea Time

Based on a four-panel manga, K-On! is a story that portrays the everyday lives of girls who join a light music club on the verge of being disbanded, with the club as the main focus.

The anime began airing in April 2009, and a second season followed in 2010.

It was loved by not only anime fans but a wide range of people, sparking a major boom.

The “anime pilgrimage” to real-life locations also became a hot topic, didn’t it?

Here, we’ll introduce plenty of the songs performed in the openings, endings, and within the show of K-On!.

Listening to them again after a while got me super hyped!

[K-On!] After-School Tea Time Songs (11–20)

Pure Pure HeartAfter School Tea Time

Pure Pure Heart - High Quality (with Lyrics)
Pure Pure Heart After-School Tea Time

It’s a classic piece of girls’ pop whose sparkling keyboard intro makes your heart skip a beat.

As Hokago Tea Time, it’s their sixth single overall, and it’s performed in Episode 7 of K-On!! in the show.

The main vocal is by Mio Akiyama, and the lyrics wonderfully capture her character—cool and beautiful, yet with an adorable side.

My Love Is a StaplerAfter School Tea Time

A track included on the mini-album “Houkago Tea Time” released under the name Houkago Tea Time.

The humming version that Yui performed in episode 1 of the second season of the anime K-On!! was later made into a CD as a campaign prize.

It’s also noteworthy that Yui handles the lead vocals for the first verse, while Mio takes the lead for the second.

The band arrangement is laid-back, and the melodic guitar phrase in the intro leaves a strong impression.

Curry, then riceAfter School Tea Time

In the anime K-On!, only a portion of the performance was used during the welcome party live in episode 8, but it was safely included on After-School Tea Time’s mini-album, “Hōkago Tea Time.” Judging by the title alone, it might seem like a half-joking comic song, but it’s a unique number that likens a girl’s wavering feelings of love to curry rice.

It’s also one of After-School Tea Time’s fastest tracks in terms of BPM, and the wildly energetic bass is seriously cool.

Head over heels for GītaAfter School Tea Time

[K-ON!] [Yui] Head Over Heels for Gitah
Head Over Heels for Gitah - Ho-kago Tea Time

It’s not a song by After-School Tea Time; it’s a character song for Yui Hirasawa released in June 2009.

“Gīta” is the nickname for Yui’s Gibson Les Paul Standard, and the track is packed with her love for the guitar.

The lyrics skillfully incorporate lines that Yui would likely say, making it a must-listen for fans of both Yui and Gīta.

School Song of Sakura-gaoka Girls’ High SchoolAfter School Tea Time

As the title suggests, this is a song presented as the school anthem of the high school attended by the members of After-School Tea Time in the story.

There are two versions: one sung by the entire student body during the opening ceremony in the show, accompanied on piano by music teacher Sawako Yamanaka, and a rock version included as the coupling track to “Pure Pure Heart.”

Cagayake!GIRLSAfter School Tea Time

It’s the opening theme song of K-ON! and the memorable first single by the Sakuragaoka High School Light Music Club.

Compared to GO! GO! MANIAC and Utauyo!! MIRACLE, it isn’t an especially flashy band ensemble, but it incorporates advanced techniques throughout.

The detailed touches are great—lyrics that evoke the laid-back vibe of high school girls, and each member’s solo coming in alongside the group’s shouts.

Despite its intensely prominent bassline, this song is also charming for its lyrics packed with Mio’s cuteness.

In the show, it appears in Season 2, Episode 7, presented as a song Mio wrote for members of the Mio Akiyama Fan Club, with both the title and lyrics shown.

The punchline is that her unique sense wasn’t understood not only by the club members but even by the members of After School Tea Time.
