island shadowYukiji Asaka

It’s said that this song was created when Amami was separated from Japan and placed under American administration in 1946, out of a longing to return to Japan.
I had associated Asaka with jazz, so I was surprised by this kind of gentle island song.
In the calm vocals, I can feel a quiet yearning for restoration.
YakushimaTakashi Hosokawa

It sings of wishing to be like the Jomon Sugi, a World Heritage–listed cedar.
Yakushima, though a small island, is rugged, mystical, and full of diverse qualities.
It feels like an island where the desire to be manly and dignified comes together.
I think I understand the feeling of wishing to be that way.
Tropical Love StoryAkira Wakayama, Yoshiko Nozawa

It’s a song released in 1954, and I’ve heard that bus guides often sang it back then.
Set at Nagasakibana, it expresses the sorrow of being unable to meet a loved one.
It’s depicted as beautifully as the view of Mount Kaimon.
There’s also an alternate version by the Komadori Sisters.
Young Men's Ohara-bushiTeruhiko Saigō

They say Mr.
Saigō is a tourism ambassador for Kagoshima.
I’ve heard his stage name was also taken from Saigō Takamori, and he even sings that Saigō is like an older brother to him.
It shows just how much Saigō Takamori is respected and loved by the people of Kagoshima.
People from places that have produced great figures seem to dream big, which is truly encouraging.
Step by stepMidori Karashima

This is the theme song of Kagoshima Osumi.
It’s a work by Ms.
Karashima, who is from Kagoshima City, and it says that even if it’s step by step, we should move forward on our own path.
Ms.
Karashima created it as a song anyone can sing—one that brings smiles and a positive spirit.
I hear it’s also used in the Osumi Ekiden relay race.
Atsu-hime Main ThemeKagoshima Chamber Orchestra

This is the theme song of the NHK Taiga drama Atsuhime.
It is said that Atsuhime was intelligent from a young age and people often remarked that if only she had been a boy.
The piece possesses a calm yet dignified atmosphere that suits such anecdotes.
Among Taiga drama theme songs, it is grand and memorable.
Song of Remote Island Squadron TanegashimanTAKUYA

They are a community-based hero team of three warriors active mainly on Tanegashima since 1996.
They address issues facing remote islands, such as population aging.
They’re said to be very popular with children.
They appear at events, all on a volunteer basis.
They dash around looking cool.
