Kotaro

Hello! I’m Kotaro, a music reviewer.

In junior high school, my uncle got me into the Beatles and that opened the door to Western music for me.

I was also the lunchtime DJ, playing all kinds of Western music like blues and punk rock.

In high school, I got serious about the electric guitar and spent from morning till night learning Eric Clapton’s, Jimmy Page’s, and Jimi Hendrix’s guitar parts by ear.

During the school festival, creative differences led to me taking the stage alone with just my electric guitar, and I performed songs by RC Succession and THE BLUE HEARTS.

In college, I realized my dream of forming a band, though it was a punk band that only played live once a year (lol).

We mostly did original songs, but we also covered bands like The Clash and NOFX.

Recently, to broaden my musical literacy, I’ve been listening to Japanese music as well as Western music, and I regularly research the latest tracks on radio and online.

Privately, when I graduated from university I switched from electric guitar to Tsugaru shamisen and started challenging myself with Japanese folk songs.

With the Tsugaru shamisen, I won first place in the beginners’ division at a national tournament.
