The history of R&B—rhythm and blues—goes way back, and the term itself is said to have existed since the 1940s.
That said, the image most people have of R&B as a music genre today was largely established from the 1990s onward, shaped through the lens of club music.
In this article, the first half features a lineup focused on the latest hits and standout tracks by rising artists, while the latter half is packed with classic songs from the 1990s, often called the golden age of R&B.

Western R&B Classics: From the Latest Hits to Timeless Smash Songs [2025] (71–80)
I Wanna Be DownBrandy

Brandy made her album debut in 1994 at the young age of 15, showcasing talent worthy of the “child prodigy” label to the world.
Alongside fellow prodigy Monica, with whom she collaborated on “The Boy Is Mine,” she released many indispensable classics that define the 1990s R&B scene.
The focus here is “I Wanna Be Down,” a track from her 1994 album “Brandy,” which sold six million copies worldwide.
It was the album’s lead single and remains a beloved, unquestioned R&B classic.
To deliver such commanding vocals at just 15 can only be described as the work of a prodigious singer.
At the same time, it’s precious that you can still sense a charming, youthful innocence.
Its influence on later artists is also undeniable—Chance the Rapper boldly sampled it on his 2019 track “Ballin Flossin,” featuring Shawn Mendes.
Crazy In Love ft. JAY ZBeyoncé

A massive hit famous for its intro featuring the funky horn section sampled from the Chi-Lites’ classic “Are You My Woman (Tell Me So),” by the Chicago soul male group that was popular in the 1970s! Released in May 2003 as the lead single from the ultimate female artist Beyoncé’s solo debut album “Dangerously in Love,” it became a huge worldwide smash along with the album.
Beyond being a classic of R&B, it stands as one of the defining songs of the early 2000s, and I fondly remember hearing it everywhere here in Japan.
It also drew buzz for featuring Jay-Z—Beyoncé’s boyfriend at the time and later her husband.
There’s no need to rehash how cool the track is, but with Beyoncé’s supremely sexy vocals, an irresistibly catchy melody, and Jay-Z’s effortlessly cool rap, it’s the kind of song you can confidently say was destined to be a hit.
A truly great track that had a major influence on the singers who followed.
Crystal TearsElmiene

Released in March 2024, Elmiene’s track—marked by his delicate, emotive vocals—centers on the theme of revisiting lost love.
Created through his first collaboration with Grammy-winning producer D’Mile, the song reflects on past mistakes and expresses a yearning to mend a broken relationship.
Evoking the torch songs of James Blake and the soul of D’Angelo, its musicality is vividly rendered through Elmiene’s voice, resulting in a striking work.
Beginning in April 2024, a tour of eight cities across Europe and the United States will feature this track among others.
It’s a must-listen for anyone seeking to heal the pain of heartbreak or discover a new talent in R&B.

A ballad that sings of regret and anxiety over an unattainable relationship.
It was digitally released in 2012 by American singer Frank Ocean.
It is sampled in Knxwledge’s 2011 track “Thnkn.” The song was originally written as a ballad for Bridget Kelly’s debut album, and when it leaked online in 2011, Kelly’s version was re-released under the title “Thinking About Forever.”
Green Light (feat. André 3000)John Legend

John Legend is a multi-talented artist who excels at everything from producing to being a singer-songwriter.
His track Green Light is a funk-tinged, electronic R&B song with striking synthesizers.
It’s a lavish collaboration that also features rapper André 3000.
Used to Love UJohn Legend

John Legend is an artist who’s also active as a music producer.
He’s provided numerous great songs for many artists, and he’s released outstanding tracks of his own as well.
Among them, a standout I especially recommend is “Used to Love U.” It’s R&B with strong soul music characteristics, brought together with incredible vibes throughout.
If you like soulful tracks, be sure to give it a listen.
Player TwoJordan Ward

The song released in April 2024 by St.
Louis native Jordan Ward is a moving R&B number that blends soulful vocals with meticulous production.
Centered on themes of family bonds and the strength to overcome hardship, his gentle, intimate delivery offers comfort to listeners.
Included on the album FORWARD, this track captures the essence of Ward’s musicality.
Set against a calm, understated sound, the lyrics reflect on past experiences and express gratitude to family, resonating with many listeners.
It’s the perfect song for a quiet night of solitary listening or for moments when you want to feel your connection with someone important.
