The Ventures, a representative band of guitar instrumentals and surf rock, sparked a huge craze in Japan during the Showa era.

For guitarists, a song where the guitar is pushed this far to the forefront is impossible to ignore.

The tightly chopped phrases and tones, the nuanced use of muting and dynamic touch—these are top-tier techniques, and the subtlety they create makes this song exceptionally satisfying.

TelstarThe Ventures16rank/position

It was created to commemorate the launch of the artificial satellite Telstar, and apparently the original is a song by The Tornados.

Maybe because I listened with that in mind, I felt a sense of breadth, scale, and boundlessness.

I also found it interesting to think of this as part of the Ventures’ world.

Theme of Napoleon SoloThe Ventures17rank/position

It was also popular in Japan as a spy drama.

I heard it was released as a coupling with the Batman theme.

I didn’t watch the show, but the theme song really stuck with me.

It’s quieter than Batman—maybe because it’s about spies? Are the shouts by The Ventures?

Hawaii Five-0The Ventures18rank/position

This is also the theme song of an American crime drama, and it seems The Ventures handled the opening theme.

The crisp, lively guitar and drums feel pleasant and fun.

It has that classic crime-drama vibe—like you’re running and chasing down a suspect.

Batman Theme - The Ventures

It was a live-action adaptation of an American comic.

I feel like I watched it back then.

The lyrics were just a repetition of “Batman.” The frantic arrangement sounded like it was signaling an emergency.

Even in The Ventures’ performance, it seems to sound as if they’re singing “Batman,” despite there being no lyrics.

Black Sand BeachThe Ventures20rank/position

It seems that Yuzo Kayama was a fan of The Ventures and composed with them in mind.

I’ve heard The Ventures were very surprised by the sound when they listened to the performance tape.

Indeed, this song had such a Ventures sound that you wouldn’t think it was Kayama’s original.

Both The Ventures’ breadth and Kayama’s understanding are remarkable.

I love the lively feel that makes you want to move your body.

The members seem to be enjoying the performance as they play, and it’s like watching guitar magic.

The “teke-teke.

.

.” in this song even sounded like a shamisen.

It has a playful vibe and is really interesting.
