Revival Among the Youth? Classic Rockabilly Anthems and Recommended Popular Songs (11–20)

Red HotBilly Lee Riley

Billy Lee Riley is an artist who’s hugely popular among hardcore rockabilly fans.

Although he didn’t receive much mainstream attention during the rockabilly boom of the 1950s, he was highly regarded by devoted enthusiasts even back then.

His song “Red Hot” is one of his few hits.

His raspy, growling voice is especially memorable, so if you’re into Japan’s Yūkadan (The Yukadan), this is a must-check track!

Honey HushJohnny Burnette Trio

Honey Hush is a signature track by the American rockabilly band the Johnny Burnette Trio, who were active for only about five years starting in 1952.

The songs written by rhythm guitarist and vocalist Johnny Burnette and his older brother, bassist Dorsey Burnette, embody pure rock ’n’ roll.

Their music had a major influence on later rock ’n’ roll bands, and its straightforward sound is sure to resonate with younger generations as well.

It’s a must-listen for anyone who loves rock.

Blue Suede ShoesCarl Perkins

Blue Suede Shoes, Carl Perkins’s classic released in 1956.

Famous as a rockabilly standard, it’s still used widely across many forms of media today.

It’s said that the song was inspired when he attended a concert by his close friend Johnny Cash, saw a couple dancing, and noticed the man jokingly warning, “Don’t step on my shoes.” And that’s where the blue suede shoes come in.

Rock This TownStray cats

Stray Cats, with their flashy looks and slick pompadours.

An American neo-rockabilly band active in the 1980s.

Their swingy, sprightly Gretsch guitar and upright bass make for an exceptionally captivating sound.

Rock N Roll RubyWarren Smith

Rockabilly classic ‘Rock N Roll Ruby,’ composed by Johnny Cash.

It’s a rockabilly standard that has been covered by many artists.

This time, we’re featuring the version first released by rockabilly singer Warren Smith.

His vocals are smooth and easy on the ears, so even those new to rockabilly should enjoy it.

Each version has its own character, so be sure to check out the other covers as well.

Honey Don’tCarl Perkins

When talking about rockabilly, you can’t ignore the heavyweight artist Carl Perkins.

He also achieved tremendous success as a songwriter, providing many songs to famous rockabilly singers such as Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison.

One standard number of his that I highly recommend is “Honey Don’t.” Released in 1956 as the B-side to the single “Blue Suede Shoes,” this track gained popularity despite being a B-side and was covered by bands like the Beatles and Billy “Crash” Craddock.
