Mizue Takada, who combined idol-like popularity with genuine vocal prowess and vividly colored the music scene of the Showa era, hails from Minamikyushu City in Kagoshima Prefecture.

After passing an audition program, she debuted in 1977 with the single “Garasuzaka,” scoring a string of hits despite being a newcomer.

She achieved the remarkable feat of sweeping that year’s music awards, including the Best New Artist Award at the Japan Record Awards.

“Watashi wa Piano,” composed by Keisuke Kuwata of Southern All Stars, is one of her signature songs.

She retired in 1985 to much regret; however, in August 2015, she performed on a music program for the first time in about 30 years, moving many listeners.

I want to keep smiling — Ikimono-gakari

A resolute will that simply keeps facing forward comes through and makes my heart swell.

Released in July 2011 as Ikimono-gakari’s 20th single, it was used as the commercial song for Nissan’s “New Nissan Serena.” It’s an up-tempo number that conveys a heartfelt wish to keep smiling even in difficult times, straight and true.

Even though it runs over six minutes, the grand arrangement by Seiji Kameda and the powerful vocals by Kiyoe Yoshioka blend so beautifully that it feels like it’s over in a flash.

The song won an Excellence Award at the 53rd Japan Record Awards and is also included on the album NEWTRAL.

Give it a listen when you’re feeling down or need energy for tomorrow.

This is a rock group based in Akita City that calls themselves a “V² Mixture Rock Band.” Their hallmark sound blends the vintage feel of ’80s–’90s J-ROCK with the expressive power of visual-kei rock.

In March 2018, they released their first nationally distributed maxi-single, followed by releases including the mini-album “Soul Journey.” Their music features heavy, low-end-driven sound with catchy melodies, and lyrics that move from negative to positive, resonating deeply with listeners.

A unique episode is that their drummer, Napiko, was selected for “Atsushi Tamura’s London Boots No.

17” in December 2020.

Another draw is their cohesive live performance, thanks in part to the guitarist and drummer being actual siblings.
