US3 is a jazz-rap group formed in London in 1991 that helped establish the genre of hip-hop jazz.

They were officially granted permission to freely sample from Blue Note Records’ catalog, and their 1993 release “Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia),” which samples “Cantaloupe Island” from Herbie Hancock’s album Empyrean Isles, became a hit.

Gilles Peterson is a DJ, producer, and record label owner born in Caen, France and based in London, and a key figure who helped popularize acid jazz worldwide.

He began in the 1980s as a DJ specializing in acid jazz, and in September 1986 launched a radio program called Mad on Jazz on BBC Radio.

In 1987, together with DJ Eddie Piller, who came out of London’s mod scene, he founded Acid Jazz Records, and in 1990 he established his own label, Talkin’ Loud.

The James Taylor Quartet was formed around James Taylor, the former keyboardist of the leading neo-mod unit The Prisoners.

They released their first album, Mission: Impossible, in 1987, and In the Hand of the Inevitable became the Acid Jazz label’s biggest hit.

The first single released by the label Acid Records (founded in 1987) was Galliano’s “Frederic Lies Still,” which is said to have sold 20,000 copies at the time.

Twenty-five years later, Eddie Piller opened the Acid Jazz Vinyl Store upstairs at the Ben Sherman store on Commercial Street in London.
