Despairingly dark Western songs: World-famous and popular tracks (1–10)
Sombre dimancheDamia

The song “Sombre dimanche,” composed in Hungary in 1933, is also well known in Japan under the title “Gloomy Sunday.” Although it’s an urban-legend-level claim with no solid evidence, the song is said to have such a dark atmosphere that hundreds of people allegedly took their own lives after listening to it.
According to Asahi Shimbun, five people are said to have been prompted to commit suicide by this song.
This time, I’ve chosen a cover by the French chanson singer Damia.
It’s an extremely somber piece, so please be careful!
RedboneChildish Gambino

Donald Glover, known as a multi-talented creator, is also recognized as the artist Childish Gambino.
He has produced numerous acclaimed tracks, and the one we’re introducing today, “Reddone,” carries a particularly dark and distinctive atmosphere among them.
Its sound, reminiscent of 80s synthesizers, paired with his soulful, high-register vocals, creates an intriguing contrast.
Rather than being simply dark, it offers a unique shade of darkness that sets it apart.
PatienceEivør

Eyeball is an artist from the Faroes under Belgian territory.
She’s known for an impressive style that’s rooted in traditional Faroese music and folk songs, skillfully blending folk with digital sounds.
Among her many tracks, the particularly dark piece “Patience” stands out.
While contemporary in sound, it achieves a serious tone by successfully mixing in the essence of Faroese folk music.

Concavo Y convexoDiego El Cigala

Diego El Cigala is a cantaor who represents contemporary flamenco.
In the flamenco world, he’s treated like royalty and has the vocal prowess to match his reputation.
His song “Cóncavo y convexo” is arranged simply for piano and voice, and it’s characterized by a dark, somber atmosphere throughout.
Not all flamenco is fiery and passionate—so why not take this opportunity to explore the genre?
She’s In PartiesBauhaus

Bauhaus is a UK band known as a pioneering presence in gothic rock.
Debuting in 1979, they attracted popularity from the start with a sound steeped in a distinctive atmosphere.
Although the band has disbanded several times, they are active again now and are held in very high regard by fans of gothic music.
Their classic track “She’s in Parties” carries a punk-tinged vibe while maintaining an overall dark tone.
If you want to experience a unique sense of despair, this is a must-check piece.
2 WickyHooverphonic

Hooverphonic is a Belgian music unit known for trip-hop.
Rather than pure trip-hop, their appeal lies in a distinctive sound that mixes a variety of genres such as funk, jazz, and gothic music.
The track I’m introducing here, 2 Wicky, is crafted with a gothic atmosphere and carries a dark mood throughout.
Stylish yet devastatingly dark.
If you’re looking for a song like that, definitely give it a listen.
Morada AbertaMariza

Mariza, a songstress known as one of the leading artists of fado, Portugal’s traditional folk music, has helped revive its popularity with her exceptionally high-level vocal technique and expressive power.
Today, she is recognized as one of Portugal’s foremost, highly skilled performers.
Her famous song “Morada Aberta” portrays the quintessential fado theme of a widow’s inner feelings, and its overall somber, tragic tone garnered widespread popularity.
It’s also recommended for fans of Latin music!
