Moving Western songs: classic and popular tracks among the world’s most emotional songs.

Unlike Japanese music, one of the advantages of Western music is that you can be moved by the mood of the melody even if you don’t know the lyrics.

This time, I’ve selected Western songs that are especially moving.

In the first half, I’ve prioritized commercially successful works and well-known tracks.

In the second half, I’ve gathered truly moving Western masterpieces, regardless of their popularity or commercial scale.

If you’re well-versed in Western music, you’ll likely encounter masterpieces you haven’t heard before in the latter half—so be sure to check them out!

The masterpiece “Anywhere Away from Here” is a collaboration between British artist Rag’n’Bone Man—who gained worldwide popularity with his 2016 single “Human”—and American R&B singer Pink.

The lyrics are quite enigmatic and difficult to interpret, but they likely express something akin to human nature: dreaming of a sliver of hope even in the face of despair.

Edith Piaf, a singer who represents France.

She was already active as a singer during World War II, and perhaps because of that background, her vocals carry a real sense of conviction.

Among her works, the piece I especially recommend as a moving masterpiece is “Hymne à l’amour.” Released in 1950, it portrays profound love and is known in Japanese as “Ai no Sanka” (Hymn to Love).

The lyrics are truly beautiful, so be sure to check out the Japanese translation as well.

Buika is an artist from the island of Mallorca in Spain.

She’s a leading figure in the genre known as nuevo flamenco, which blends flamenco with elements of jazz and R&B, and she’s also a Latin Grammy winner.

A song of hers I’d highly recommend is No Habrá Nadie En El Mundo.

This track propelled her to worldwide popularity and portrays gratitude and love toward a former partner.

Its mature melody and lyrics offer a uniquely moving experience, and her overwhelming vocal power is one of the highlights!

What a Wonderful WorldLouis Amstrong

Louis Armstrong, the jazz singer beloved by listeners worldwide and known by the nickname “Satchmo,” also earned great popularity as a trumpeter.

When it comes to his moving masterpieces, many people probably think of What a Wonderful World.

This song was created in response to the tragic circumstances of the Vietnam War, and its lyrics carry a message of peace.

Combined with Armstrong’s warm vocals, it’s an exceptionally moving work.
