When you think of male Western music groups, the image that comes to mind changes depending on what genres the person listens to, doesn’t it?
Whether it’s a band or a vocal group… leaving that judgment aside for now, in this article we’ll spotlight the so-called boy bands while also looking at R&B-style vocal groups, and introduce a wide range of popular male groups, both classic and contemporary!
Many of them have global hit songs—some of you might even have first encountered Western music through their tracks.

The Jonas Brothers are a rock band from the United States made up of three brothers.
Within rock, you can enjoy a wide range of styles—from the cool, punchy sound of Green Day to the stylish, polished sound of The 1975!
Back for GoodTake That
Take That, often described in the UK as a band that rivaled the Beatles in success, are considered pioneers of the boy band boom.
They released their first single in 1991, and the hit of It Only Takes A Minute the following year brought them into the spotlight.
Subsequent singles Why Can’t I Wake Up With You and Pray further boosted their popularity, cementing their status.
Although they disbanded in 1996, they reunited in 2006 and remain a music group that enjoys overwhelming support from the British public.
DynamiteBTS
In the 2020s, the boy group enjoying explosive popularity is the Korean dance-vocal group BTS! They captivate not only Asia but the entire world.
The members’ looks, lovable personalities, razor-sharp dance and rap, and cool vocals—everything is top-tier.
It’s still fresh in our memories that with “Dynamite,” released in 2020, they became the first Asian artists to be nominated for the 63rd Grammy Awards and performed on a solo stage.

MMMBopHanson
Formed in 1992 by the three Hanson brothers—just like their group name suggests—this music group made a splash with their 1997 debut single, the pop song “MMMBop,” which combined freshness with a catchy vibe and became a massive hit.
Although they’re from the United States, their name soon became known overseas as well.
One of the fun things about following Hanson is hearing their voices change as you go through their discography.
Both their youthful sound and their more mature tone are wonderful in their own ways.
Grande amoreIl Volo
Il Volo is a vocal group selected from among many children, formed to discover the next generation of Three Tenors.
They are a globally renowned group from Italy who also appeared in “We Are the World 25 for Haiti.” At first, conscious of the Three Tenors, they mainly sang canzoni, but as they grew older, they shifted toward a pop style.
Their song “Grande amore” marked a turning point for them and helped expand their recognition worldwide.
Reggaetón LentoCNCO
Be sure to check out this Latin boy group! Based in Florida, USA, CNCO was formed in 2015 by five winners of an audition show.
Their debut album, Primera Cita, released the following year, quickly put them in the spotlight.
As I mentioned earlier, their appeal lies in their distinctly Latin vibe—in other words, their passionate musicality.
Each member has a bold, wild coolness that feels like it’s coming right at you.
It Never RainsTony Toni Tone
Tony! Toni! Toné! stood alongside Boyz II Men in supporting the R&B scene of the ’90s.
While Boyz II Men’s songs are catchy R&B with a pop sensibility, Tony! Toni! Toné! delivers a much grittier, straight-up R&B sound.
They’re both R&B vocal groups, but if you’re looking for something more soulful, I highly recommend Tony! Toni! Toné!.
Although the group went through frequent lineup changes, it eventually settled on three members—D’wayne Wiggins, Dyson Tate Riley, and Frank Stickemz—and they’re still active today.
