Practice Songs Helpful for Learning Mixed Voice (Middle Voice) [For Women]
The term “mixed voice.” If you’re interested in singing, you’ve probably heard or seen it at least once.
Many of my vocal training students say, “I want to be able to use mixed voice!” However, I feel that surprisingly few people actually understand what it is.
So what exactly is mixed voice? Simply put, it’s “the voice between chest voice and head voice.” That’s why it’s also called middle voice.
In actual songs, it’s mainly used to cover the high-tone range that’s hard to hit with chest voice, but by changing the balance of how much chest and head voice you mix, you can create a wide range of vocal expressions.
In this feature, I’ve gathered female singers who skillfully use mixed (middle) voice to express their songs.
I’m sure you’ll find plenty to reference when you practice with the goal of mastering mixed voice yourself.
I hope you find it helpful.

chantAdo

Ado’s smash hit, “Show.” It’s a track that leans into dance music more than ever and became a major success.
While the song is known for its high level of difficulty, it actually features mixed voice in many places.
Although it doesn’t use mixed voice for long sustained notes, mixed voice sections appear repeatedly in the second verse and in the English lyrics of the chorus.
Since it’s already a very challenging piece, be sure to give it a close listen.
fall from favor; leaving the capital in disgrace (metaphor for a decline in status or being sidelined)Yorushika

A song by Yorushika released in April 2023.
Regarding the mixed voice in this track, it’s used very effectively, especially in the brief moments where the pitch suddenly rises—most notably around the A-melody parts—to express a gently airy high tone.
This is not a head voice that relies on nasal resonance like typical falsetto; instead, try practicing by aiming the voice broadly toward the entire upper palate.
Since the sections using mixed voice are very short, I think this song is also useful for practicing smooth transitions between vocal registers.
idolYOASOBI

YOASOBI’s smash hit “Idol” gained worldwide attention through its anime tie-in, so many people will likely recognize it.
The hardest aspect of this song is, without a doubt, the intense pitch shifts.
Like a Vocaloid track, complex rises and falls in pitch come in rapid succession.
The chorus also features mix voice.
Although the mix voice sections are short, the drastic pitch changes make them quite challenging.

BiscuitCHANMINA

Chanmina’s song “Biscuit.” While it isn’t all that popular in Japan, it’s extremely popular in Korea, and it’s especially noted for its live performances.
In this piece, a mixed voice appears near the end of the bridge.
This mixed voice is delivered with a shout-like quality, and because it’s held as a fairly long sustained note, it’s quite challenging.
There’s only one spot that uses mixed voice, but it’s very difficult—so give it a try!
That’s My BabyRIRI

RIRI is a Japanese female R&B singer-songwriter with world-class talent.
Among Japanese female R&B singers, it’s no exaggeration to say her vocal ability is in a league of its own, and she’s highly regarded in certain circles as a true powerhouse.
Her signature song “That’s My Baby” features intricate runs and, toward the end of the chorus, a strong, feminine mixed voice reminiscent of Ariana Grande.
The song is simply very challenging, so definitely give it a try.
If you call it loveUru

This is Uru’s 12th single overall, released in June 2022.
It was used as the theme song for TBS’s Sunday drama “My Family.” The term “mixed voice” is somewhat ambiguous, so it’s hard to pinpoint exact moments in the song where it appears.
However, in this slow ballad, I felt Uru skillfully switches among a variety of techniques: using a chest-leaning mixed voice in the mid-to-high ranges of the A and B sections, and spanning from chest-leaning mixed voice to falsetto-leaning mixed voice in the chorus.
Pay attention to the contrast with the high chest voice that comes in right after the instrumental break.
This track serves as a very useful reference for the diverse ways mixed voice can be employed.
LuluAdo

Ado’s hit number “Lulu.” It features a style similar to her signature song “Usseewa,” and drew nationwide attention with its intense lyrics and melody.
From the perspective of mixed voice technique, this piece is extremely challenging.
The pitch movement is very dramatic, and there are multiple sections that call for shouts.
On top of that, you need to sing using a mixed voice, which demands considerable pitch control and solid fundamental vocal skills.
If you’re confident in your singing ability, be sure to give it a try.
