Kabutomushi Gaidenking

This is a video clip of Osama, known for his literal Japanese cover versions.

It’s from 2005, when he released his Beatles cover album “Kabutomushi Gaiden,” and the opening MC is an imitation of the classic American variety show, The Ed Sullivan Show.

New EraAdo

[Parody Song] New Genesis Fat Ver. #Shorts #NewGenesis #Ado #Uta #ONEPIECEFILMRED
New Era Ado

Ado’s “New Genesis” has topped numerous music charts.

Since it’s the theme song for the smash-hit film ONE PIECE FILM RED, many people have probably heard it.

The song’s appeal lies in its bouncy sound and vocals that leap dramatically up and down in pitch.

That makes it quite challenging to sing at karaoke, but it also lends itself well to comedy: the gap between parody lyrics and skilled vocals can really get laughs.

When creating a parody, it’s easier if you pick a theme that rhymes with the title “Shinjidai” (New Genesis).

Ms. Hanako on a high pedestalback number

[Parody Song] That One Person Always in Cooking Class: “Hanako on the High Pedestal” lololol [back number]
Hanako, the unattainable flower by back number

Takane no Hanako-san, a candid song about unrequited love.

It’s one of back number’s signature masterpieces, right? Even that song, in the hands of the popular YouTubers Homies—known for their hilarious “relatable in all kinds of situations” bits—gets transformed into a song about “classic moments in cooking class”! Cooking practicums held from elementary through middle school—some people feel nostalgic, while others are experiencing them in real time.

The one thing we can say for sure is that “then and now, cooking class hasn’t fundamentally changed.”

PerfumeEito

Perfume / Eito [Parody Version for a Corporate Drone Working at a Black Company] vs. Boss with PV
Eito - Perfume

In 2020, singer-songwriter Eito took Japan’s pop music scene by storm after going viral on social media.

His song “Perfume,” built around the warm tone of an acoustic guitar and a relaxed tempo, is very easy to sing at karaoke.

Since it’s a slow ballad, making a parody version is simple, too.

The key to parodying this song is to land a solid punchline at the end of the chorus.

What matters is whether you can skillfully convey the backstory and the buildup to that punchline in the first half of the song!

[Let’s Make It Together!] For the First Time in Forever – Osaka Dialect Version – Frozen
For the First Time in Forever - Sayaka Kanda, Takako Matsu

Singing songs from Frozen at karaoke is a guaranteed hit! Lots of people know them, and the call-and-response is fun, too.

This parody version sings the lyrics in Kansai dialect.

Even if you sing it perfectly, it’s funny when Kansai-ben slips in, right? Since it’s easy to tweak the lyrics, it’s a great pick for parody beginners!

FlamingoKenshi Yonezu

[Parody Song] "Flamingo" Non-Popular Version [Kenshi Yonezu] [TikTok]
Flamingo Kenshi Yonezu

“Flamingo” is a medium-tempo track that combines a funky bassline with lyrics that carry a sense of humor.

The way the word “Flamingo” is used in the chorus—catchy and pop—really showcases Kenshi Yonezu’s knack for wordplay.

If you’re doing a parody version, you’ll want to land the laughs solidly in the chorus, too.

Don’t be shy or hesitant—just sing it out.

When young people go to karaoke together, this one is sure to get everyone hyped!
