Breaking through the cordonTokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra

This is a scorching instrumental number born from the power of the horn section and the rhythm section’s meticulously tight ensemble.

Rooted in the energetic ska sound of Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra and skillfully blending elements of jazz and rock, the track embodies the band’s determination to break new ground.

Featured on the mini-album “HEROES,” released in March 2012, it has become a staple in their live shows.

Its dynamic structure—featuring guitar and saxophone solos—and the bittersweet undertones glimpsed within make it a captivating piece.

It’s a song recommended for those who want to break out of their shell through music and for anyone feeling a passionate fire in their heart.

Sheep Minimum Sieg

Minimumsieg, a band funded by Niigata Prefecture.

They’ve been expanding their activities at local live houses and have recently been gaining nationwide recognition.

Among Minimumsieg’s songs, the one I especially recommend as easy for men to sing is Hitsuji (Sheep).

Although the overall sound is fairly bustling, the vocal line has gentle rises and falls, making it easier to sing than it sounds at first.

There are no high-register parts at all, so it’s a good choice for men who struggle with high notes.

freezing rainAkio Kayama

A mature, melodramatic enka that embraces aching love and loneliness—this is Akio Kayama’s debut song.

Its folk-tinged arrangement that gently conveys a woman’s feelings and his richly emotive vocals blend perfectly to create a gem of a classic.

Beginning in December 1977, he sold over 30,000 copies through hand-to-hand sales, and in 1983 he received honors including the Asahikawa Cable Radio Award and the All-Japan Cable Broadcasting Grand Prix.

In 2008, the song was featured in a Kirin Beverage canned coffee commercial, and it continues to be loved by many across generations.

With its relaxed tempo and an accessible melody line that anyone can hum, it’s a highly recommended track that you can sing with confidence at karaoke.

Non-lie Heart – Tani Yuuki (Official Lyric Video)
Un-‘Lie’-Heart Tani Yuuki

A poignant song by Tani Yuuki that beautifully portrays the pain and turmoil of heartbreak, where even promises sworn for eternity can crumble in an instant.

The conflicting emotions—disgust toward the person once loved and a love that still hasn’t faded—are woven together through skillful metaphors that pierce the listener’s heart.

While delicately expressing the wounds left by betrayal, the piece also conveys a strength that strives to overcome the sadness.

Included on the album “Memories,” the lyric video released in December 2021 was directed by Kosuke Matsuoka.

When you’re seeking to heal the wounds of a broken heart, this song will gently stay by your side.

Yumi Matsutoya – Vapor Trail (Yumi Arai The Concert with Old Friends)
Hikoukigumo Arai Yumi

The story of a boy drawn on a white slope reflects Yumi Arai’s inner landscape from her youth.

With a clear, crystalline voice and beautiful piano lines, she gently sings of a longing for the heavens and a parting from the earthly world.

Inspired by feelings for a classmate from her elementary school days, the piece takes flight on a fragile yet refreshing melody, brimming with the radiance of life and hope for liberation.

Released in November 1973 as the title track of the album “Hikōki Gumo,” it drew renewed attention in 2013 as the theme song for Studio Ghibli’s “The Wind Rises.” It is a gem of a song that tenderly supports those who have experienced the loss of someone dear, as well as young people standing at a crossroads in life.

Himawari, with its strikingly wistful piano intro phrase, is a hit single released in 2002.

The lyrics and music were written by Masaharu Fukuyama, who, like Kiyoshi Maekawa, is from Nagasaki.

It was also performed at that year’s NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen, so it’s widely known and a popular choice for karaoke.

As you’ll hear, the melody development is very characteristic of Fukuyama, with no enka-style techniques, so even those who usually sing pop should be able to handle it well.

The overall key is low, so if you struggle with low notes, try adjusting the key to suit your range before singing.
