Aim for a high score! Karaoke songs for men to achieve top scores

If you’re simply aiming for a high score at karaoke, the key points for song selection will naturally be to choose songs with “easy-to-sing melodies,” “easy-to-understand lyrics,” and “clear, straightforward rhythms.”

That being the case, your picks will tend to come from the ’90s and earlier—so-called Showa-era and early Heisei kayōkyoku, new music, and J-pop.

Many recent songs have complex melodies and rhythms, and plenty of people think “This is hard!” after just one listen.

In this article, aimed at men who want to score high at karaoke, I’ve also proactively selected relatively singable tracks even from among more recent songs.

Compared to older hits, these are a bit more challenging to sing, but each song’s write-up includes tips and points to watch for to help you boost your score, so please use this as a guide and give them a try!

It feels great when you nail a high score!

The piece “Straight Up feat.

JESSE,” in which Dragon Ash collaborates with JESSE, known for RIZE and The BONEZ, brought a lot of buzz at the time of its release thanks to the joint performance of two artists who represent Japan’s rock scene.

Surprisingly, the song is quite easy to sing.

While its Western-music flavor might make it seem difficult, the vocal line covers a narrow range with no drastic pitch shifts.

As long as you can handle the English, it’s a track anyone can aim to score highly on.

Beyond the Night SkySMAP

Beyond the Night Sky – SMAP
Beyond the Night Sky SMAP

This is SMAP’s 27th single—so famous it needs no introduction—released in January 1998, with lyrics by Shikao Suga.

Now, if you’re going to sing this song at karaoke: perhaps because it was written for the idol group SMAP, the melody is very straightforward and doesn’t require a wide vocal range either high or low.

The key is simply how honestly you can sing the melody.

Still, in today’s J-pop scene full of complex melodies, the fact that this song manages to be so memorable while being so simple and narrow in range is a remarkable compositional achievement worth noting! Don’t overthink it—if possible, sing it together rather than solo and aim for a high score!

cold; curt; blunt; unfriendlyRADWIMPS

RADWIMPS – Aloof [Official Music Video]
Aloof RADWIMPS

This RADWIMPS song was released for streaming in November 2018.

It was not issued as a single on CD, and its CD release appears on the album ANTI ANTI GENERATION.

The music video, produced in a drama style, is also highly memorable.

The song isn’t necessarily difficult to sing, but the way the lyrics sit on the melody is somewhat distinctive, and compared to the hit songs from the ’90s and earlier that we’ve featured frequently in this theme, it doesn’t have a particularly clear, instantly graspable chorus melody.

So if you’re aiming for a high score when singing this song, you’ll want to study in advance and learn it thoroughly before performing.

It might be interesting to listen with an ear for how its characteristics differ from ’90s hits.

Above all, try to sing gently while maintaining clarity.

Singer-songwriter Aile The Shota, whose refined musicality caught the eye of SKY-HI, has been gaining popularity.

Because he’s an artist rooted in R&B, many people may feel his songs are difficult, but that’s not the case.

“Foolish (Prod.

Taka Perry)” incorporates R&B flavors while keeping the melodic rises and falls relatively gentle, so it doesn’t have the same level of difficulty as classic, hardcore R&B.

There is a falsetto part in the pre-chorus, so just pay attention there when you sing.

Bitter VacationMrs. GREEN APPLE

Bitter Vacation Mrs. GREEN APPLE

One of the most popular bands right now is Mrs.

GREEN APPLE.

When it comes to their songs, the high notes—like mix voice and falsetto—really stand out.

Because of that, many people feel it’s hard to aim for a high score.

That’s why I recommend “Bitter Vacation.” For a Mrs.

GREEN APPLE track, this one has a relatively narrow vocal range, and it doesn’t call for advanced vocal techniques like ad-libs or falsetto.

The pitch movement isn’t exactly gentle, so it’s not the easiest among all J‑pop songs, but if you want to aim for a high score with a Mrs.

GREEN APPLE song, this is definitely one you should add to your repertoire.

A Little Love SongMONGOL800

It’s one of MONGOL800’s signature songs, included on their 2001 album “Message.” It’s also well-known for being covered by many different artists.

Now, when it comes to singing this song at karaoke, the key is how steadily you can hold the pitch in the low notes of the opening A and B sections.

Even in the original performance, there are quite a few spots where the pitch isn’t exactly stable, so keeping those low melodies solid will be crucial.

On the flip side, the high parts can often be powered through with momentum, so if the low range is tough for you, it might be a good idea to raise the key a bit.

Do your best to keep the original song’s energy intact!

SakurazakaMasaharu Fukuyama

Masaharu Fukuyama - Sakurazaka

This is the 15th single by actor and singer Masaharu Fukuyama, released in April 2000.

It became a million-selling hit, with total sales exceeding 2 million copies.

There may be some debate over whether Fukuyama’s main profession is acting or singing, but the mid-to-high range middle voice (mixed voice) he showcases in this song is quite impressive.

Even when singing it at karaoke, using mixed voice well can be difficult unless you’ve taken some vocal training.

Still, if you memorize the melody thoroughly and aim to sing as gently and softly as possible, even in the high notes, you’ll do well.
