What colors do you like NEW! Lyrics and music by Osamu Sakata

You can almost picture a child cheerfully holding a crayon and saying, “This is my favorite color!” This magical song, which teaches the joy of expressing what you love out loud, was born from composer Osamu Sakata’s experience of children excitedly telling him their favorite colors one after another.

It debuted in June 1992 as NHK’s “Song of the Month” on Okaasan to Issho, and the album “Donna Iro ga Suki” was also released.

It might be fun to sing during drawing time and try to guess which crayon your child will pick up first!

Let me introduce “Miteté Carnival,” a song that’s so fun it lifts your spirits just by listening! It aired in June 2024 on NHK’s “Okaasan to Issho.” The lyrics and music are by Takumi Murata, who is also the leader of the rock band “Carnavacation.” He creates music that fuses Brazilian sounds with pop, and he works on many songs for children as well.

For example, he wrote the September 2023 monthly song “Ninjin Engine Rocket” and the exercise song “Kao Taisou.” Through his music, Murata hopes to make the world as joyful as a carnival.

Be sure to sing along with your kids and make every day a little more fun!

Mirai KuruKuru – With Mother (Okaasan to Issho), April 2019 Song
Miraikurukuru Yuichiro Hanada, Atsuko Ono

The April 2019 “Song of the Month,” Mirai Kurukuru.

It’s sung by Yuichiro Hanada and Atsuko Ono.

It’s a dance song with an unusually rock-like sound for a children’s song! In fact, the choreography even includes a move where you strum an imaginary guitar.

It’s a bit hard for little kids, but for older preschoolers it’s a fun track they can imitate and dance to.

It would probably hype up a karaoke session, too.

The lyrics are so positive that if you listen when you’re feeling down, your worries might just blow away!

Nana-iro no Shabondama (Seven-colored Bubbles) – Okaasan to Issho – April 2018 Song
NANAIRO no Shabondama by Yuichiro Hanada and Atsuko Ono

Soap bubbles that children love.

The song voices a child’s adorable question: “If I rode on one of those bubbles and flew away, what would the town look like from the sky?” It’s a gentle, unhurried piece with a soft mood, like soap bubbles drifting through the air.

Let's Go with a Smile by Daisuke Yokoyama / Takumi Mitani

This is “Egao de Ikou,” the April 2011 Monthly Song that Daisuke Yokoyama and Takumi Mitani sang.

No matter what, if you keep your head up and spend your time thinking about fun things, today will surely be a happy day too! It’s a song that conveys that message.

When your child is feeling down or a friend is depressed, it makes you want to sing it together.

It feels like it teaches us the importance of thinking about enjoyable things precisely when times are tough and of starting to move forward toward what’s next.

Urara was the first “Song of the Month” for Maya Onee-san on NHK’s Okaasan to Issho, debuting as the song for April 2022.

It was written and composed by Yoshiki Mizuno of Ikimonogakari.

The bright, rhythmic melody and gentle, uplifting lyrics—like “Let’s give a warm, tight hug; everything will be all right”—leave a strong impression on both children and adults.

It’s a lively yet tender tune that perfectly suits new beginnings in spring and everyday moments for parents and kids alike.

A very heartwarming, gentle cheer-up song! “Happiness Puzzle” appeared on NHK’s “Okaasan to Issho” as the Song of the Month for August 2024.

The lyrics are by Keisuke Yamakawa (real name: Takao Ide), who has shared many wonderful words through children’s programs over the years, and the music is by composer Takayuki Hattori, known for his memorable themes in dramas and anime.
