When you think of karaoke in Japan, most people sing J‑pop, but every now and then someone does an English song and the room really lights up, right?
This time, we’re featuring “interesting” tracks from Western music.
That doesn’t mean songs that are simply funny.
In Japan, where English isn’t widely spoken, singing Western songs just because the lyrics are funny won’t really land.
Rather than “funny” as in comical, we’ve selected songs that are “interesting” in the sense of intriguing.
Of course, we’ve only picked tracks that are likely to hype up a karaoke session, so feel free to use this as a reference!

Funny Western songs for karaoke (1–10)
Night of FireNIKO
A quintessential Eurobeat track, Night of Fire.
It was wildly popular during the nationwide para para dance boom of the 2000s.
Not only adults at the time but even children might remember hearing it.
It’s a crowd-pleaser because everyone knows it, and it’s also notable for its sheer musical intensity.
It might be even more fun to sing it while doing para para.

Smooth CriminalMichael Jackson
Singer-songwriter Michael Jackson, beloved around the world as the King of Pop.
He was an iconic singer-songwriter who was hugely active in the 1980s and 1990s and known by everyone.
Among his works, the song I especially recommend for karaoke is Smooth Criminal.
It’s a cool track packed with Michael Jackson’s appeal, but when an amateur sings it seriously, it can somehow end up looking a bit funny.
Shots ft. Lil JonLMFAO
In the 2010s, EDM became a massive worldwide hit.
Its heavy, thumping bass is incredibly addictive.
Among the acts that gained particular popularity in the EDM scene is LMFAO, who perform “Shots ft.
Lil Jon.” The drop’s “shot, shot, shot-shot-shot” phrase is especially memorable, isn’t it? I think it’s hilarious if you sing that part with full intensity.
It’s also a track that really gets the crowd going, so definitely try singing it at karaoke.
Funny karaoke novelty songs in Western music (11–20)
Because We CanFatboy Slim
“Because We Can,” the classic track by British rapper Fatboy Slim.
If you’re Japanese, you’ve probably heard it at least once.
That’s right—the very song used as the walk-on music for comedians in the M-1 Grand Prix, the tournament that crowns Japan’s best manzai duo.
While it isn’t widely known around the world, it’s extremely famous in Japan, so it should really get the crowd going at karaoke.
Aside from the chorus, it’s basically English rap, so it might work well to have everyone join in just for the chorus.
Karma ChameleonCulture Club
Culture Club is a pop music band formed in London.
While they fall under the pop category, they specifically excel in New Romantic and blue-eyed soul styles.
Their song Karma Chameleon is their biggest hit and gained worldwide popularity.
The track centers on a gay protagonist, expressing his feelings toward a man he’s drawn to.
In Japan, it’s often played when effeminate or openly gay TV personalities appear, so it’s sure to get the crowd going if you sing it at karaoke!
Money, Money, MoneyABBA
ABBA, the music group that gained worldwide popularity with their catchy pop tunes.
They released numerous mega-hits and were beloved across the globe, and even in Japan their songs are still used in various media.
Among ABBA’s tracks, a fun song that really gets the crowd going at karaoke is “Money, Money, Money.” It’s the tune you often hear on variety shows when the theme is money.
With its strong impact, it’s sure to liven up any karaoke session.
World’s Smallest ViolinAJR
Since the late 2010s, a variety of social media platforms have emerged.
Among them, TikTok has enjoyed tremendous popularity, giving rise to numerous superstars.
AJR, known for singing “World’s Smallest Violin,” is one of the groups that rose to stardom through TikTok.
The song went explosively viral on TikTok in the early 2020s and became a worldwide hit.
The rapid-fire section at the end is sure to hype up a karaoke crowd.
