Funny Western pop songs for karaoke skits
When you think of karaoke in Japan, most people sing J‑pop, but every now and then someone does an English song and the room really lights up, right?
This time, we’re featuring “interesting” tracks from Western music.
That doesn’t mean songs that are simply funny.
In Japan, where English isn’t widely spoken, singing Western songs just because the lyrics are funny won’t really land.
Rather than “funny” as in comical, we’ve selected songs that are “interesting” in the sense of intriguing.
Of course, we’ve only picked tracks that are likely to hype up a karaoke session, so feel free to use this as a reference!

Funny Western karaoke gag songs (41–50)
Macho ManThe Village People

Here’s a track by Village People, who have released many funky dance numbers with strong comedic elements, such as “YMCA” and “In the Navy.” They’re a very entertaining group whose comedy songs are delivered with consistently high quality and a sense of seriousness.
The part where they keep chanting “macho” almost sounds like Japanese, making it a delightful tune.
Born To Be WildSteppenwolf

The theme song of the biker bible-like film Easy Rider, released in 1969, is Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild.” It’s a well-known rock number in Japan as well, partly because it was used in a commercial.
The chorus features call-and-response, giving it a high level of polish as a party piece.
Bang BangJessie J ft. Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj

This song is known for having its music video covered by the five-member new unit “Royal Flush” led by Chiemi Blouson.
The original music video is cool, but when I think about the cover, I can’t help but laugh.
The idea of covering not the song itself, but the entire music video, is interesting, isn’t it? It feels like it could become a new trend.
Purple HazeJimi Hendrix

If you go wild in psychedelic clothes and keep shouting “Papu-heyzz!” at the top of your lungs, you’re already Jimi Hendrix.
Rather than trying to follow the lyrics or melody, repeatedly yelling “Papu-heyzz!” might get a better reaction from the crowd.
As for me, when I run out of material at Western-music karaoke, I get by by going full Jimi Hendrix.
Watch MeSilentó

Silentó’s “Watch Me,” which went viral worldwide in 2015.
From this music video, various dance moves like the “whip” and the “nae” spread everywhere.
They’re still loved as fun references around the world, so it might really get the crowd going if you go to karaoke with foreign friends.
My WayFrank Sinatra

The lyrics themselves are a serious masterpiece about life, but for some reason it strongly evokes the image of older managers and executives singing it intensely and emotionally at karaoke.
If you consciously sing it in the opposite style as a parody, it could get laughs.
For the ending, finish with your arms spread wide to make it feel authentic.
Try practicing by really getting into character.
Man in the MirrorMichael Jackson

Michael’s vocal style is very distinctive, and I feel this song really brings that out.
In fact, Yo Oizumi includes Michael Jackson in his impersonation repertoire, and the song he imitates is this one.
It’s a song many people know, and if you can do the impression well, it’s sure to get the crowd going.
In conclusion
This time, I picked a selection of fun, crowd-pleasing Western songs that are sure to heat up a karaoke session.
As mentioned in each review, I think the lineup includes many tracks you already know.
