Acid jazz masterpieces. Recommended popular tracks.

Acid jazz is a music genre that was born in the UK in the 1980s.

Many of you have probably heard the name.

However, since acid jazz blends various genres into jazz, the vibe can differ greatly from track to track, so I imagine few people can instantly recall its melody.

This time, I’ve picked out some classic acid jazz tracks for those people.

There are plenty of lesser-known songs as well, so even those who regularly listen to acid jazz will find recommendations here!

Gabin is a music group popular in Italy, one of the hot zones for acid jazz.

While they’re essentially categorized as a pop band, they take on a variety of genres.

This time, we’ve picked their acid jazz classic “Doo Uap, Doo Uap, Doo Uap.” It’s primarily structured around swing jazz, and aside from the use of analog sounds, its composition closely resembles electro swing jazz.

Turn On, Tune In, Cop OutFreak Power

Freak Power is a music group known for a sound that blends acid jazz with trip hop, soul, and funk.

Although their total activity spanned just four years—1993–1996 and 1998–1999—their impact was significant, and they remain beloved by acid jazz enthusiasts today.

Their track Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out is one of their signature works, and you can sense inspiration from and respect for Donny Hathaway’s The Ghetto in the music.

Mr.

Scruff is a music producer from the UK.

In fact, he’s the artist behind a piece that’s very familiar to many of us.

One of his signature works, “Kalimba,” was used as sample music in Windows 7.

Depending on your generation, you’ve probably heard it at least once.

Another one of his representative tracks is “Get a Move On.” Its melody, which feels like swing jazz arranged into acid jazz, leaves a strong impression.

JackieBossa Nostra & Bruna Loppez

When people think of acid jazz, many probably imagine the UK.

And indeed, the UK remains the hottest zone for it.

But Italy is actually also famous as a hotbed of acid jazz.

In Italy, the acid jazz band Bossa Nostra and music producer Bruna Lopez have a hugely devoted following, and their collaboration is this work, “Jackie.” With strong bossa nova elements woven into the acid jazz, it also works perfectly as a chill-out song.

Sports, Not Heavy CrimeXploding Plastix

For those who enjoy gothic, dark-tinged tracks, I recommend “Sports, Not Heavy Crime.” This piece is by the Norwegian duo Exploding Plastix.

Since one of the members originally played in a black metal band, as mentioned, a dark and gothic atmosphere permeates many of their works.

This track gradually builds in intensity, and in the latter half you can feel a big band-like power.

From the very beginning of the track, the fast walking bass is striking.

This artist is recommended for those who cover standard jazz and seek out new forms of jazz.

It’s acid jazz with a groove you’ll want to relax to, sipping a drink and listening slowly on vinyl.

Missione a BombayNicola Conte

Because it often uses electronic sounds, acid jazz is often thought to be a relatively young genre.

While it is indeed shorter-lived compared to others, acid jazz has actually existed since the 1960s.

The artist said to have laid its foundations is Nicola Conte, the creator of Missione a Bombay.

This work stands out among his catalog, delivering a distinctive form of acid jazz centered on Arabian-inspired sounds.
