From the UK! The Allure of Grime — Essential Albums and Fan Favorites to Start With
The music known as “grime” is said to have its roots in UK garage and 2-step—styles of house music—while incorporating elements like rap and reggae, and it became a popular genre in the UK during the 2000s.
It’s incorrect to call it a subgenre of hip-hop; while there are similarities, there are also key differences.
For example, grime artists aren’t called rappers—they’re known as “grime MCs.”
For those of you interested in grime, we’re introducing some essential albums you should start with!
We’ve included recent landmark releases while keeping things beginner-friendly, so take this opportunity to check them out.

From the UK! The Appeal of Grime — Essential and Popular Albums to Hear First (11–20)
Love Me Or Hate MeLady Sovereign

When it comes to artists who make grime music, many people tend to picture only men.
But that’s not the case.
Among them, Lady Sovereign stands out as a leading female artist in the scene.
Her songs are often bright and pop-leaning, so she’s a great recommendation even for those who don’t usually listen to grime.
If you start with her debut album, Public Warning, you’ll get a real sense of her appeal.
There’s also a version that comes with a first-press bonus, so be sure to look for it.
Head Get MangledNewham Generals

Newham Generals are a grime music duo consisting of D Double E and Footsie.
Their greatest appeal lies in performance elements unique to a duo, such as their call-and-response and harmonies.
Their signature work is their debut album, “General Speaking.” The title literally means “generally speaking,” which might suggest a message that the album itself is anything but ordinary.
Both artists are active as solo performers as well, so if you’re interested, be sure to check out their solo work too.
Gunfingers (ft. JME & Wiley)P Money

If you’re looking for grime music that feels more like R&B than hip-hop, I recommend P Money.
In particular, the album “Gunfingers (ft.
JME & Wiley)” features many tracks with a different vibe from most grime music.
Because of that, it became popular even among people who don’t usually listen to grime and was a major hit.
He’s also known for putting a lot of effort into his music videos, so if you like the album, be sure to check those out too.
3 Minutes to LiveYizzy

Grime is an ever-evolving genre, so of course there are promising young artists to watch.
One of them is Izzy, a grime artist born in 1999 featured in this article.
In 2020, he released a project titled “Prince Of Grime,” calling himself the prince of grime.
As a young talent aiming for the future—and beyond—of grime, he’s been drawing attention while also sparking mixed reactions.
His 2019 release “Welcome To Grime Street,” which he put out at the young age of 20, is an EP that includes the track “3 Minutes to Live,” whose video has surpassed one million views on YouTube.
Be sure to check out Izzy’s new vision of what “grime” can be!
Queen’s Speech Ep.4Lady Leshurr

Lady Leshurr is one of the most beloved public figures in the UK.
She’s active in various fields such as television and acting, but her main focus is as a grime MC.
Armed with razor-sharp flow, she has won numerous music awards.
She has also been honored with an MBE for her achievements.
One of her signature works is “Queen’s Speech Ep.
4.” It’s a bit confusing, but Queen’s Speech has been released from 1 through 7, so be careful not to mix them up.
Run (Ft. Rag’n’Bone Man)Bugzy Malone

When it comes to grime MCs with a flair for entertainment, it has to be Bugzy Malone.
He started out by posting freestyle raps on YouTube.
His videos eventually went viral, catapulting him to stardom.
Since then he’s been steadily releasing tracks, and he keeps a playful spirit—like paying homage to films in his music videos.
If you want to learn more about him, check out the album “B.
Inspired.” It features many collaborations with well-known artists and is a very rewarding listen.
