[High-pitched warning!] Songs with high notes that are hard to sing
The Japanese music scene is known for having a relatively low emphasis on groove, but an unusually large number of high-pitched songs.
In particular, since Japan has finally started earnestly incorporating overseas music in recent years, the overall level of songs has risen dramatically.
With that in mind, this time we’ve picked out Japanese songs that are on the higher side.
From songs with a wide vocal range, to tracks that have pinpoint high parts, to songs that stay in the high register throughout, we selected from a broad set of perspectives—so be sure to find the tracks that suit you!

[High notes warning!] Very high-pitched songs that are hard to sing (91–100)
Black BirdAimer

The theme song for the double-lead film Kasane starring Tao Tsuchiya and Kyoko Yoshine.
A dark track that matches the film’s content.
It’d be really cool if you could pull this off at karaoke.
The chorus opens up into a soaring high melody, and it feels great!
May it be filled with kindnessJUJU

This was JUJU’s ninth single in total, released in February 2009.
It was featured as the commercial song for MTV Japan and Nissan’s collaboration project, “MTV meetalk with NEW NISSAN cube,” and became a major hit, helped in part by JUJU herself appearing in the commercial.
Although this feature has been introducing many songs with fairly high vocal difficulty, among them this one has a vocal melody that’s relatively easy to sing and memorize.
For women who are good at singing high notes, it feels like an ideal track to showcase the charm of your voice.
If you place your voice so it resonates against the upper palate inside your mouth while singing, it should be easier to recreate JUJU’s open, high-tone vocal quality—so give it a try.
[High Notes Warning!] Difficult High-Pitched Songs to Sing (101–110)
Futari SaisonKeyakizaka46

This work, the third single by Keyakizaka46, is a song that depicts love and growth through the changing seasons.
Its distinctive dance performance incorporates classical ballet and contemporary dance, symbolizing the unity of youth and individual development.
Released on November 30, 2016, it sold 353,640 copies on its first day to top the Oricon Daily CD Single Ranking.
The music video has been highly praised, with over 9.
7 million views.
While the song feels fresh and radiant, it can be difficult to sing all the way through unless your natural voice is relatively high.
If you have a high voice, especially for women, give it a try.
Marshmallow dayMr.Children

Among Mr.
Children’s songs, “Marshmallow day” is one of the most challenging.
Its vocal range is quite wide, from mid1C to hiF.
While the high notes tend to draw attention, the mid1C section is actually quite tough, and the A melody sits very low with little room to lower the key, making it tricky to adjust.
If you’re good at high notes but struggle with low ones, one option is to sing the A melody an octave higher.
Since falsetto appears in the bridge, be mindful not to shout too much in the choruses beforehand so your voice doesn’t get worn out.
REMMr.Children

Among Mr.
Children’s songs, one I especially recommend for its wide vocal range is REM.
The song spans a remarkably broad range from mid1 F# to hi B, with the highest note, hi B, appearing repeatedly in the A, C, and D sections.
The pitch moves up and down dramatically, and notes like hi B and hi A show up right after mid2 F# or mid2 G as if it’s nothing, so you’ll need excellent pitch control.
There are also many shout-like parts, which demand strong vocal cords.
If you’re confident in your singing ability, definitely give it a try.
fanfareMr.Children

Mr.
Children’s classic “fanfare,” which evokes the vibe of UK rock.
Although it features a crisp, punchy rock sound, the vocals frequently employ shouts, so powerful singing is required in every section.
The range is fairly wide, from mid1 C# to hi A#, and the hi A parts demand both shouting and sustained long tones, requiring solid foundational vocal technique.
If you’re confident in a raw, gritty vocal style, be sure to add this to your repertoire.
SenbonzakuraMao Abe

Included on Mao Abe’s first cover album, “MY INNER CHILD MUSEUM,” which was released in January 2021.
The original song is a so-called Vocaloid track sung by Hatsune Miku, first published in 2011.
Vocaloid songs are originally composed without regard for the human vocal range, but Mao Abe masterfully delivers this kind of piece with her powerful high-tone voice.
This powerful high register isn’t something you can easily pull off just by “singing high,” so if you’re having trouble, it might be helpful to refer to the original Vocaloid version as well.
And if you want to further polish your proud high notes, I’ll be waiting for you in my vocal training sessions!
