Aim for a high score! Karaoke songs for men to achieve top scores
If you’re simply aiming for a high score at karaoke, the key points for song selection will naturally be to choose songs with “easy-to-sing melodies,” “easy-to-understand lyrics,” and “clear, straightforward rhythms.”
That being the case, your picks will tend to come from the ’90s and earlier—so-called Showa-era and early Heisei kayōkyoku, new music, and J-pop.
Many recent songs have complex melodies and rhythms, and plenty of people think “This is hard!” after just one listen.
In this article, aimed at men who want to score high at karaoke, I’ve also proactively selected relatively singable tracks even from among more recent songs.
Compared to older hits, these are a bit more challenging to sing, but each song’s write-up includes tips and points to watch for to help you boost your score, so please use this as a guide and give them a try!

Easy★RiderTamio Okuda

It’s one of the signature songs that represent Tamio Okuda.
Its comfortable key makes it easy to sing, and its strength lies in the fact that people of all ages know it.
The mid-tempo feel and a chorus with a relatively narrow melodic range make it especially easy to sing and a good target for high scores.
While paying attention to pitch, focusing on vocal power will make it sound even more pleasing.
My Past Life, Many Lifetimes AgoRADWIMPS

A four-piece Japanese rock band, RADWIMPS released this track in July 2016.
It’s an upbeat, easy-to-groove rock number, and since the vocal melody—especially the chorus—is very simple, it’s also an ideal choice for aiming for a high score at karaoke.
I think most men can probably sing it in the original key.
It’s a really fun song, so honestly, the best way is to just enjoy singing it without worrying about the score.
But if you simply enjoy singing it like that, I think it naturally leads to a high score anyway.
Don’t overthink it—just have fun!
Sora-buneTOKIO

Sora Fune (Skyship) is TOKIO’s 35th single, released in August 2006.
The song was written and composed by Miyuki Nakajima.
It seems there were plans at first for Nakajima herself to record and release it, but there’s an anecdote that someone suggested, “Wouldn’t it suit TOKIO’s Nagase?” and the song ended up being offered to TOKIO.
True to the title, the song’s arrangement drives forward powerfully like a ship, and with its up-tempo, easy-to-sing feel, it’s likely a track anyone can aim for a high score with.
That said, if you’re shooting for a high score, it might be better to sing it a bit more carefully than Nagase’s delivery in the original.
horizonback number

A song by the Japanese rock band back number, released in August 2020.
It features a medium-to-slow tempo with a catchy pop melody, and I think it’s quite conducive to achieving high karaoke scores in terms of rhythm, which is a key scoring factor.
However, there are several parts where you have to switch between falsetto and chest voice, so you should be careful there.
If you’re not confident in switching registers, lowering the key might be a good option.
bookmarkAqua Timez

It’s a coming-of-age song by Aqua Timez that looks back on memories with a lover from whom one has become separated.
The energetic, fast-paced melody is one reason for its popularity.
Although the rhythm is quick, the repeated pitch makes it easy to sing.
Since there aren’t many long sustained notes, be careful not to go off pitch.
Dragon nightSEKAI NO OWARI

It’s a huge hit that has surpassed 100 million views on video sites.
Because the melody stays in a narrow, low range and lacks big dynamics, it’s relatively easy and a song where it’s easier to score high.
With today’s karaoke machines having voice changer features, I think you can also capture the right vibe.
AliensKirinji

Formed by the brothers Takaki Horigome and Yasuyuki Horigome, Kirinji is a very cool band, with skillfully off-kilter melodies and impeccably chosen words.
Their vocals are languid and gentle, yet you can feel a quiet passion beneath.
I think their songs are easy to sing at karaoke, too!
