If you think about it, you’ll probably recall love songs, tracks with mystery elements, and many others—there are songs with all kinds of worlds and stories.

Among them, some works have even been novelized based on the original songs.

So in this article, we’re going to round up and introduce Vocaloid-style novels—Vocaloid novels!

The Kagerou Project series sparked a huge boom, centered on Niconico.

Beginning with the song “Jinzou Enemy,” it expanded into a cross-media franchise and gained immense support.

Some of you may even feel you “devoted your youth to KagePro.” The novel Kagerou Daze -in a daze- was released in 2012, and since then more than eight related novelizations have been published.

There are also anime and manga, so it might be enjoyable to read while comparing the different storylines.

Venom: Courting Maiden SyndromeKairiki Bear

Kairiki Bear is a Vocaloid producer who has released many highly addictive tracks.

That sound that gets you hooked after just one listen is amazing, isn’t it? Now, the novelization of Kairiki Bear’s music is Venom: Kyuai-sei Shoujo Shoukougun.

It tells the story of three girls—Lulu, Nana, and Elim—who confront a mysterious illness called “Kyuai-sei Shoujo Shoukougun” (Courtship Syndrome in Girls).

It may especially resonate with the younger generation living in today’s internet-native world.

If you’ve read Goodbye Declaration, you might be a bit surprised that Saki Ayase is the protagonist here.

Novel: Senbonzakurakuro usagi P

When it comes to famous works recognized even by people who “don’t usually listen to Vocaloid songs,” Senbonzakura is the one that comes to mind.

It drew attention after being used in TV commercials and covered by Sachiko Kobayashi.

Even now, long after its release, it continues to rank high on Vocaloid karaoke charts.

The first volume of the novel adaptation of Senbonzakura was released in 2013, and it’s a five-part series in total.

The story follows Mirai, a protagonist living in the modern world, who is transported to another world and becomes caught up in a battle between humans and monsters.

Loki 1 THE CURSED SONGMikito-P

Roki is a rock ’n’ roll Vocaloid duet number with a cool slap-bass groove.

It was released in 2018 by Mikito-P.

A novel based on the song, Roki 1: THE CURSED SONG, was written using the track as its theme.

The story revolves around a high school band member as the protagonist.

A major element of the plot is an urban legend claiming there’s a song called “Roki” that curses anyone who listens to it.

The book is authored by Soya Mukai, known for Aoiro Noise to Killer Tune.

The song “Ano Natsu ga Hōwa Suru” opens with a shocking first line.

Created by Kanzaki Iori and released in 2018, a novel of the same title was published in 2020.

The story’s timeline is set 13 years after the events of the song.

It follows the same protagonist, Chihiro.

Its shadowy worldview, which also touches on social issues, may hit you hard.

It’s a hit that defined an era in the Vocaloid scene on Niconico—truly a track that makes you want to say, “This is Vocaloid.” Starting in 2013, “Noisy Girl Exploding Brain” was novelized, written by Erika Yoshida, who also works on scripts for dramas and anime.

The series comprises six works released over about a year and a half.
