LolaThe Raincoats

A girls’ trio that debuted in 1979 and led the so-called post-punk generation in both ability and popularity.

Their musical prowess was praised by the likes of John Lydon and Kurt Cobain.

Dinosaur Jr.

, the living encyclopedia of US alternative rock who have been drawing attention from younger music fans thanks to the documentary film Freakscene, which was released in Japan in March 2022.

Centered around J Mascis—dubbed the “Apathetic Overlord” for his eccentric personality and plaintive vocals—the band’s original lineup is known to include bassist Lou Barlow, who later gained popularity with projects like Sebadoh, and drummer Murph.

Emerging from the 1980s hardcore scene, they were recognized by Sonic Youth, charismatic figures in the indie world, and signed to the venerable SST Records, releasing two classic albums: You’re Living All Over Me and Bug.

Lou later left the band; after that, they made their major-label debut and found commercial success, but Murph also departed, and the group effectively became a J Mascis solo project until they disbanded in 1997.

A few years later, in 2005, the original members reunited, and at their own pace they remain very much active today.

Their trademark—heart-wrenching melodies drifting through Mascis’s ear-splitting, roaring guitar—is truly one-of-a-kind, and it’s worth noting the crucial role they played in shaping 1990s alternative rock.

If you want to savor their pop appeal, try 1991’s Green Mind; if you’d like to experience the powerful band ensemble of the original trio, the two aforementioned indie-era albums are highly recommended!
