While they debuted as a hardcore punk band, the iconoclastic group that went on to pioneer sounds akin to ’90s alternative rock and post-hardcore was Hüsker Dü, formed in Minnesota in 1979.

Initially a four-piece that even included a keyboardist, they quickly solidified into the legendary lineup of Bob Mould, Greg Norton, and Grant Hart.

In the indie scene they enjoyed immense popularity and influence—so much so that many prominent bands, including Nirvana, openly cited them as an inspiration.

As noted at the outset, their early sound was steeped in raw punk and hardcore, yet they had already developed a musicality that went beyond hardcore, with rugged, wistful melodicism.

Their masterful second album Zen Arcade, released on the esteemed SST label, was an ambitious double LP that drew comparisons to The Who’s Quadrophenia.

Unfortunately, during their indie days they didn’t receive adequate support from their label, and although they continued to release ambitious works after signing to a major—such as their fifth album, Candy Apple Gray—they never achieved major commercial success.

Even so, the innovative music they created—marked by the inventive ensemble playing of the three members, superb melodies, and compelling lyrics—will only continue to be appreciated more and more in the years to come.
