In the 1980s, rock music gained a vast audience, and at the same time a mainstream industry took shape.

Meanwhile, as various genres emerged and branched out, the media introduced a category defined as “rock that didn’t fit the existing mold”: alternative rock.

This time, while tracing the roots of alternative rock, we’re also focusing on the musicians who went on to lead the scene.

Be sure to check it out.

Recommended Western alternative rock bands connected to the modern rock scene (21–30)

Honey BucketMelvins

Often regarded as the unsung heroes of the grunge scene, Melvins are a band that began in Washington State in 1983.

Known for their heavy, dragging guitar riffs and experimental song structures, they’re also recognized as pioneers of sludge metal and doom metal.

They made their debut with the 1987 album Gluey Porch Treatments, and in 1993 released the acclaimed major-label album Houdini.

That record drew significant attention in part because Kurt Cobain of Nirvana was deeply involved in its production.

The band exerted a massive influence on numerous grunge acts, including Cobain’s own band and Soundgarden.

If you want to experience a sound that defies convention—relentlessly heavy and utterly original—Melvins are the perfect choice.

The Gits are an American band whose bluesy, impassioned vocals shake the soul.

The members were vocalist Mia Zapata, guitarist Andy Kessler, bassist Matt Dresdner, and drummer Steve Moriarty.

They moved to Seattle in 1989 and drew attention from the underground scene with their 1992 album, Frenching the Bully.

Mia’s voice has been compared to Janis Joplin’s, and the fusion of her soulful cries with the band’s ferocious sound was said to create a truly singular presence.

However, in July 1993, the band met a tragic end when Mia was murdered at the age of 27.

They’re a band that will resonate with anyone seeking raw, visceral rock that feels carved from the soul.

I Wanna Be Your DogThe Stooges

An indispensable presence when discussing the origins of grunge is the American band The Stooges.

Formed in Michigan in 1967, their sound—often classified as proto-punk and garage rock—is said to have provided the blueprint for later punk and grunge.

The vocalist, Iggy Pop, became famous for his extreme performances, including stage-diving into the audience.

Their 1969 debut album, The Stooges, didn’t fare well commercially at the time, but its primal energy captivated even David Bowie.

In 2010, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame—perhaps proof that the times finally caught up with them.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to experience the raw yet pure early impulse of rock that bands like Nirvana loved.

Known as the “Godfather” who had a profound influence on the later grunge scene, Canadian-born Neil Young and the American rock band that backs him, Crazy Horse, stand at the center of that legacy.

Since launching their work together with the landmark 1969 album Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, they have captivated fans with a wide range of styles—from roaring, distorted guitar-driven noise rock to heartfelt folk.

Their raw sound is said to have influenced countless artists who followed.

Neil Young has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice as an individual and has won numerous Grammy Awards.

The rough, unbridled performances showcased on the 1990 album Ragged Glory reportedly provided direct inspiration to bands such as Nirvana.

If you want to experience soul-stirring, authentic rock, they’re the perfect choice.

The Toadies, a rock band formed in 1989, are known for their tough, dust-of-Texas sound.

Their signature style blends gritty earthiness with heaviness—often described as “Texan yet unmistakably grunge.” Their 1994 debut album Rubberneck produced major hits like the single “Possum Kingdom,” and achieved platinum certification in 1996.

The following year, they even won an MTV Video Music Award, cementing their presence not only among fans but across the scene.

Although they disbanded once, they’ve continued to fire up fans with energetic live shows.

If you’re looking for alternative rock with a dry, distinctly non-Seattle texture, they’re hard to resist.

Eddie’s GunThe Kooks

This is a track from the debut album by The Kooks, formed in the UK.

Opening with a brisk snare and choppy guitar, the song centers on unpleasant memories involving a woman—something you can glean from the title.

Its straightforward, crisp rock sound, free of unnecessary effects, feels refreshing and makes it a song you’ll want to put on in spontaneous moments.

xoxoxoSecret And Whisper

Secret and Whisper is a Canadian band known for a sound where passion and lyricism intersect.

In 2007, members of their previous band took a new step by bringing in Charles Furney as the vocalist.

Their music is rooted in post-hardcore, skillfully incorporating elements of emo and experimental alternative rock.

Their debut album, Great White Whale, released in February 2008, became a talking point in the music scene at the time, and the track XOXOXO drew attention by entering the iTunes charts within the top 100 in its first week.

Although they haven’t received major awards, Charles’s emotionally rich high-register vocals contrasted with the band’s heavy sound, along with their narrative-driven lyrics, earned high praise from specialized media, who called it a “powerful debut.” After a period of inactivity, they are set to return with a festival performance in April 2025.

This is a band you’ll want to hear if you’re seeking music with a unique world-building approach, where delicate emotional expression is woven together with an overwhelming sonic presence.
