“I want to score a perfect 100 at karaoke!” Many people probably have that kind of dream or desire to take on the challenge, right? I also often hear concerns like, “I just can’t seem to get a high score.” But don’t worry! In fact, simply being strategic about song selection and what to focus on can boost your score! This time, I’ll introduce songs that tend to be easier to score highly on in karaoke.

Many of my students have said their scores went up as they continued vocal training, so please use the song breakdowns as a reference!

Take it Happy!ORCALAND

ORCALAND is a rock band known for its positive musical style.

Their melodies and lyrics, which seem to give listeners a push forward, have earned them a solid reputation, and they’re steadily gaining attention in the Japanese rock scene.

Among ORCALAND’s songs, the one I especially recommend is Take it Happy! The vocal range is about average, and since there aren’t any sudden pitch jumps or long, belted notes, it’s perfect if you’re aiming for a top score.

Be sure to add it to your repertoire.

A letter to me, Zukai

Zukai is a band that’s drawing particular attention in Japan’s indie rock scene.

They’re a group rooted in authentic indie rock, and their well-defined sound has earned them a devoted core following.

Among their songs, the one I especially recommend is “A Letter to Me.” It may sound high at first, but the actual vocal range is quite narrow, and it doesn’t require foundational techniques like vibrato or falls.

If you’re aiming for a perfect score, definitely add it to your repertoire.

EdisonWednesday Campanella

The catchy and cute hit song “Edison.” Since Kom_I passed the vocals to Utaha, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call this the biggest hit by Wednesday Campanella.

Its charm lies above all in the chorus, packed with adorable appeal.

The melody is easy to remember, and in terms of vocal difficulty, it’s on the easier side.

The rap sections are closer to spoken narration than rap, so if you can deliver clear standard Japanese pronunciation, you can definitely aim for a perfect score.

A bouquet for the boring days — LUCKY TAPES

LUCKY TAPES is the solo project of Kai Takahashi.

Its charm lies in a style that blends a touch of R&B and soul into J-pop, releasing many songs that balance catchiness with a chic vibe.

Among LUCKY TAPES’ tracks, a especially recommended one is “Taikutsu na Hibi ni Hanataba wo” (A Bouquet for Boring Days).

It’s a slightly funky song, but it doesn’t require powerful vocals and has a narrow range, making it perfect if you’re aiming for a top score.

While it includes R&B elements, there are no demanding ad-libs or tricky embellishments, so definitely give it a try.

I look up as I walkKyu Sakamoto

Walk looking up Sakamoto Kyu — with lyrics
I Look Up as I Walk by Kyu Sakamoto

It’s truly a classic from the Showa era as sung by Kyu Sakamoto! It was released overseas under the title “SUKIYAKI” and became a huge hit in many countries.

Even today, Kyu Sakamoto is said to be the only Japanese artist to have held the No.

1 spot on Billboard’s chart for 100 weeks.

The backing track, arranged with a slight jazz flavor, beautifully colors the very simple yet slightly wistful melody.

If you’re just accurately tracing the melody and lyrics, it’s not such a difficult song, so scoring a perfect 100 at karaoke isn’t just a dream with this one! Be sure to sing it in a way that doesn’t spoil the gentle, heartwarming atmosphere of the original.

Surely, Always — Sano ibuki

Singer-songwriter Sano ibuki, who has gained popularity for his classic, straightforward musical style.

His hallmark is an unembellished sound, and he’s dropped numerous hit tunes so far, so many of you may already know him.

Among Sano ibuki’s songs, the one I especially recommend is Kitto Zutto.

The vocal range is within a typical span, and the vocal line is organized into a simple flow.

Every section features a very straightforward vocal line, so as long as you can control your pitch, you can definitely aim for a perfect score.

Pure white Fujii Kaze

Fujii Kaze is known for his stylish, R&B-centered sound, but this work comes together with a different vibe than usual.

It leans heavily into acoustic qualities, and the vocal lines are arranged to be calm and even, much like dream pop.

As a result, the range is low, and there’s no appearance of complex melodic rises and falls—such as ad-libs and other embellishments.

For a Fujii Kaze song, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say this is among the easiest to sing.
