are making waves, even taking the stage at world-class rock festivals.

Arkona is a Russian band that enjoys high popularity in the so-called folk metal genre, which incorporates ethnic and traditional instruments into heavy metal.

Centering its themes on Russian folktales and legends of the Slavic peoples, Arkona is also known as a pagan metal band grounded in the philosophy of paganism.

At the front stands the band’s founder and sole female member, vocalist Masha Scream.

One moment she sings with expansive power, and the next she deftly unleashes a vicious death growl, elevating the band’s distinctive sound to something truly definitive.

They’re well known among fans of more offbeat, frontier-leaning metal, but even listeners unaccustomed to metal sung in languages other than English may find them accessible.

Sweet JaneCowboy Junkies

Cowboy Junkies already exuded the air of seasoned veterans from the time of their 1986 debut.

They’re a band from Toronto, Canada.

As for Sweet Jane, one of Lou Reed’s signature songs, this is arguably the most ambitious and daring cover version.
