Practice songs and reference tracks for mixed voice (for men)
The term “mixed voice.”
You’ve probably heard this word at least once.
If you’ve found your way to this article, chances are many of you regularly think, “I really want to master mixed voice!!”
In fact, a great number of the students who come to my vocal training lessons tell me, “I want to be able to use mixed voice.”
Now, explaining what mixed voice actually is in terms of vocal technique could fill an entire book, so here I’ll follow the common understanding and define it as “a voice quality that sits between chest voice and falsetto (head voice).” Once you’ve learned mixed voice, you can subtly control the blend of chest and head elements—adjusting their ratio—to achieve a wide variety of vocal expressions, and you’ll also expand the range of songs you can sing.
In this article, I’ve gathered songs that should help you acquire mixed voice—a technique that can be considered essential for singing modern music.
Within the brief introductions to each song, I’ve included some simple “tips for singing,” so please use them as a reference and incorporate them into your daily vocal practice.

[For Men] Mixed Voice Practice Songs, Helpful Reference Tracks (71–80)
WanteD! WanteD!Mrs. GREEN APPLE

This is Mrs.
GREEN APPLE’s fifth single, released in August 2017.
It was selected as the opening theme for the drama “We Did It.” Motoki Omori, the vocalist of Mrs.
GREEN APPLE, has a captivating voice rich in high overtones that gives a slightly boyish impression, and that charm is fully showcased in this song as well.
The section where mixed voice is used most extensively is likely the A melody, which is sung with a soft vocal approach.
Many people misunderstand “soft” singing as simply lowering volume, but instead of making it quieter, try practicing by adjusting the speed of your breath to create dynamic contrast.
Building this habit will serve as effective training for mixed voice.
For that kind of practice, the A melody of this song is an ideal material!
life-formGen Hoshino

This is Gen Hoshino’s eighth single released exclusively for streaming, released in August 2023.
It was written as the theme song for TBS’s World Athletics and Asian Games broadcasts.
It’s a comfortable track with a lightly bouncing, upbeat rhythm that lifts your spirits just by listening.
Over this sprightly backing track, Hoshino masterfully delivers a vocal melody that leaps dramatically up and down, smoothly and exquisitely switching his vocal production.
If you focus especially on his singing in the A section, it can serve as a great reference for how to use and differentiate chest voice, mixed voice, and head voice.
I highly recommend listening carefully and studying it in detail.
powder snowRemioromen

Remioromen’s seventh single, released in November 2005.
Remioromen’s Fujimaki is also a highly skilled user of mixed voice.
That makes this song an ideal practice piece.
In the chorus where the title is sung, many people might think he’s belting the high notes in chest voice, but it’s actually a chest-leaning mixed voice.
If you tighten your throat and try to belt the high notes, you won’t be able to hold such long tones.
Practice singing with the image of opening the back of your mouth and resonating in the nasal cavity.

Happy Endingback number

This is back number’s 16th single, released in November 2016.
It was chosen as the theme song for the film “My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday.” It’s crafted into a very beautiful rock ballad.
Although this article focuses on mixed voice, in truth there are very few parts in this song that are actually sung in mixed voice.
However, the singer skillfully switches and differentiates between chest voice and falsetto (head voice), especially in the high sections like the chorus, delivering an excellent vocal expression.
I thought that by mastering this switching of vocal production, you would naturally become able to use mixed voice as well, which is why I decided to introduce it here.
Listen closely to the original vocal track and study which parts use which type of voice, then practice accordingly.
I’m sure you’ll gain a lot from it.
LA LA LA Love SongToshinobu Kubota with Naomi Campbell

This was Toshinobu Kubota’s 16th single, released on May 13, 1996, under the name Toshinobu Kubota with NAOMI CAMPBELL.
It was chosen as the theme song for the Fuji TV drama “Long Vacation,” which was especially well received among the wildly popular Monday 9 p.
m.
slot in the 1990s, and it became a major hit.
Kubota is known as one of the most skilled singers in the Japanese R&B scene, and the mixed voice he showcases in this track is truly impressive.
To produce a soft mixed voice, he likely reduces the higher overtones slightly and, instead of relying on nasal resonance as is commonly done, places the sound against the soft palate to make effective use of maxillary sinus resonance.
If you listen closely throughout the entire song and carefully study the changes in the higher overtones of the voice, you’ll find it an excellent reference and practice piece for learning effective use of mixed voice.
Wings of SteelRADWIMPS

This is RADWIMPS’ sixth digital-only single, released on April 5, 2021.
It’s a truly classic ballad with a symphonic arrangement, and within its beautiful composition, Yojiro Noda’s vocals shine as he skillfully switches among various high-register techniques.
Even in terms of this article’s theme—mixed voice—his performance showcases a wide spectrum, from the soft, falsetto-based mix used in the A and B sections to the resonant, chest-voice–based mix in the chorus.
It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call this song a “showcase of mixed voice,” making it an ideal choice for practicing the technique.
You can try copying his delivery exactly, or enjoy singing it in your own style and vocal approach.
Cinderella BoySaucy Dog

When this song was released, didn’t everyone try singing it? Listening closely, the verses (A and B sections) often sit around the song’s lowest note, E3, so the melody feels relatively calm.
However, the chorus suddenly jumps up to E5, and when you actually sing it, the large interval can be quite surprising.
Pitch control is crucial in that section.
Since the song has an overall bittersweet feel, it might be better not to hold the ends of phrases too long—leave a lingering resonance instead.
Pauses are also important.
Even when you’re not singing, treat the rests as part of the rhythm to bring out the mood.
Give it a try!
