Practice songs and reference tracks for mixed voice (for men)

The term “mixed voice.”

You’ve probably heard this word at least once.

If you’ve found your way to this article, chances are many of you regularly think, “I really want to master mixed voice!!”

In fact, a great number of the students who come to my vocal training lessons tell me, “I want to be able to use mixed voice.”

Now, explaining what mixed voice actually is in terms of vocal technique could fill an entire book, so here I’ll follow the common understanding and define it as “a voice quality that sits between chest voice and falsetto (head voice).” Once you’ve learned mixed voice, you can subtly control the blend of chest and head elements—adjusting their ratio—to achieve a wide variety of vocal expressions, and you’ll also expand the range of songs you can sing.

In this article, I’ve gathered songs that should help you acquire mixed voice—a technique that can be considered essential for singing modern music.

Within the brief introductions to each song, I’ve included some simple “tips for singing,” so please use them as a reference and incorporate them into your daily vocal practice.

[For Men] Mixed Voice Practice Songs, Recommended Tracks (81–90)

budKobukuro

Kobukuro’s 14th single, released in March 2007. It was also written as the theme song for the Fuji TV drama “Tokyo Tower: Mom and Me, and Sometimes Dad.” In Kobukuro’s songs, especially Kuroda’s part…

  • A powerful mix voice leaning toward the chest voice
  • Switching between chest voice and mixed voice
  • These two points will be very useful for practice. In his singing, the switch from chest voice is so skillful that it can be hard to notice, but it does feel like it becomes a relatively throat-tightened mixed voice. Try singing with the intention of placing the sound as high as possible in the oral cavity—around the bridge of the nose.

Right now, among up-and-coming visual kei bands, Kizu is drawing attention in the scene for their especially high level.

This year they even pulled off a successful solo show at the Budokan, and their momentum just keeps growing.

    R/E/D/ is their new song.

The vocalist, Lime, is known for his use of high tones, and in this track he delivers top-tier high notes you won’t usually hear in mainstream pop.

If you like powerful high vocals with some shouts mixed in, definitely give it a listen.

    Heartbeat Masaharu Fukuyama

It’s a track included on Masaharu Fukuyama’s 12th original album, AKIRA, released in advance as a pre-delivery single ahead of the album.

It was also selected as the theme song for the NTV Wednesday drama “#Remolove: Normal Love Is a Heresy.” Personally, I’ve always felt that Fukuyama is especially appealing for his somewhat low chest voice, but on this song he delivers a very gentle performance using a mixed voice rich in higher overtones.

His use of mixed voice at the very beginning is extremely skillful; he beautifully handles a melody with many wide leaps to higher notes without ever letting the tone become piercing.

I think the first eight measures or so of this song are ideal practice material for mixed voice.

By all means, study it and make it your own.

    GET STUPIDXY

XY is a group with an impressive style that mixes band elements into a boy-group concept.

They’re well-known as a group produced by YOSHIKI of X JAPAN.

Among their songs, the one I especially recommend as a reference for mixed voice is GET STUPID.

Arranged with a K-pop-like vibe, this track features a relatively low-difficulty mixed voice in the first half—easy enough that some people might even manage it in chest voice.

If you’re not yet comfortable with mixed voice, starting your practice with this song is a great idea.

    Mrs.

GREEN APPLE’s masterpiece “Kusushiki.” This song was chosen as the theme for the popular anime The Apothecary Diaries and, riding on the anime’s success, has drawn widespread attention.

In terms of melody, it’s an energetic major-key piece—something Mrs.

GREEN APPLE excels at—centered from the mid-low to high vocal ranges.

Not only does it feature falsetto and mixed voice, but it also delivers real power within those techniques.

If you use this song as a practice piece, your vocal ability will improve significantly.

Da-iCE is a dance-vocal group that captivates women’s hearts with their powerful vocal performances.

Speaking of Da-iCE, their hallmark is definitely those soaring high notes, right? Their new song “Black and White” showcases Da-iCE’s high register to the fullest.

The most challenging element here is, without a doubt, the mixed voice sections.

Delivering Da-iCE’s signature, strong and resonant mixed voice across a wide range is no easy feat.

    over the topHiroji Miyamoto

Hiroji Miyamoto, the vocalist of Elephant Kashimashi, has been active for many years.

Lately he’s also been thriving as a solo artist, winning support from younger generations thanks to his highly original musicality and vocals.

His new song “over the top” is perfect for savoring soaring high notes.

While it doesn’t feature much of the trendy falsetto, it repeatedly showcases a powerful mixed voice instead.

If you’re a man who has ever admired strong, high-pitched vocals, this is a track you’ll want to check out.
