Practice songs and reference tracks for mixed voice (for men)
The term “mixed voice.”
You’ve probably heard this word at least once.
If you’ve found your way to this article, chances are many of you regularly think, “I really want to master mixed voice!!”
In fact, a great number of the students who come to my vocal training lessons tell me, “I want to be able to use mixed voice.”
Now, explaining what mixed voice actually is in terms of vocal technique could fill an entire book, so here I’ll follow the common understanding and define it as “a voice quality that sits between chest voice and falsetto (head voice).” Once you’ve learned mixed voice, you can subtly control the blend of chest and head elements—adjusting their ratio—to achieve a wide variety of vocal expressions, and you’ll also expand the range of songs you can sing.
In this article, I’ve gathered songs that should help you acquire mixed voice—a technique that can be considered essential for singing modern music.

Released in March 2015 as [Alexandros]’s 10th single.
When producing high notes, if you open the vocal cords and create what’s called a “breathy voice,” it becomes falsetto (head voice).
However, by controlling the vocal cords and adjusting the amount of “breathiness,” you can produce mixed voice (a blend of chest and head voice).
To achieve high tones like Kawakami from [Alexandros], you’ll first need to practice the fundamental mixed-voice technique of directing the sound from the oral cavity toward the nose to achieve nasal resonance.
Start with a comfortable key and gradually raise it as you practice.
MagicMrs. GREEN APPLE
This is a digital-only single by Mrs.
GREEN APPLE, released in June 2023.
It was chosen as the Coca-Cola summer campaign song.
Vocalist Motoki Omori is well known for his high tones, and in this track he showcases superb control: a gentle, soft mixed voice in the A sections and a powerful mixed voice in the chorus, expressing the song’s refreshing vibe.
From a chest-leaning, strong mixed voice to a falsetto-leaning, soft mixed voice, it’s like a showcase of mixed voice techniques.
Be sure to listen closely and use it as a reference.
＝ (feat. YO_CO)NEW!BAK
Released in June 2022, this song is performed as a duet by BAK and YO_CO.
It beautifully showcases their call-and-response and overlapping vocals.
Since both singers primarily use head voice, it’s perfect for those who want to sing head-voice songs.
Because the range is on the higher side, be careful not to strain your throat.
When practicing, try singing with “h”-sounds to naturally release breath; this will make it easier to sing.
A particularly recommended method is to sing all the lyrics using “hi.” The “hi” sound makes humming easier and resonates in the head.
Start by pronouncing it lightly so that it resonates in your head rather than your throat.
Your breath will flow more naturally, and producing head voice will become easier.

About meNEW!Mrs. GREEN APPLE
Mrs.
GREEN APPLE is known for their falsetto and mixed voice.
A song that perfectly fits this theme is definitely “Bokuno Koto”! It was chosen as the support song for the 97th All Japan High School Soccer Tournament.
When you sing it, if you switch between parts sung entirely in falsetto and parts delivered powerfully with mixed voice, you’ll add impact and really impress those around you.
One thing to watch out for when switching vocal qualities is that if you change the place where you produce the sound, your balance will suffer and the transitions between chest voice and falsetto won’t be smooth.
Keep focusing on producing the sound from the vocal folds at all times.
The impression of your voice changes depending on whether you project it forward from the vocal folds or direct it backward.
Try different approaches, and when you sing while sending your voice in the direction that feels easiest for you, you’ll be able to produce both falsetto and mixed voice comfortably!
Wherever you areNEW!ONE OK ROCK
ONE OK ROCK’s signature song “Wherever you are.” Since it’s sung as a love song that vows eternity, you’ll want to use falsetto to really bring out the song’s appeal.
That said, the falsetto in “Wherever you are” appears mainly at the beginning.
The song builds toward the latter half, so about two-thirds is sung in chest voice.
If you sing the initial guitar-backed section firmly in falsetto to create contrast, it lands stylishly.
Many people who like rock and band music seem to want to sing ONE OK ROCK.
The high range can be a hurdle, but ballads let you cover the high notes with falsetto, so they’re recommended.
Open your throat and keep the breath flowing steadily!
Mirror feat. Kosuke SaitoNEW!Leo Ieiri
It was released for streaming on October 8, 2025, and was written as the theme song for the NTV Wednesday drama “ESCAPE: It Was Supposed to Be a Kidnapping.” It’s a collaboration between Leo Ieiri and Kosuke Saito, the guitarist-vocalist of UNISON SQUARE GARDEN and TenTwenty.
Despite the very high vocal range, both of their voices soar in the same register, and the result is truly beautiful.
It’s wonderful as a solo, of course, but if possible you’ll want to sing it as a male-female duet! That said, finding a man who can sing this high is no easy task.

When you sing it, try to focus on using your breath and producing a strong tone.
If you aim to resonate in your head while you phonate, you’ll gradually get closer to the right sound.
Core strength matters, too!
Before our feelings overlap…NEW!Ken Hirai
From the very beginning, Ken Hirai’s beautiful singing voice resonates in this song.
It’s a 2004 track that was used in a TOYOTA Corolla Fielder commercial and also served as the theme song for the Fuji TV drama “The Truth of Tsugumi Kuzushi.” The lyrics make it a ballad that feels both like singing and like speaking to someone, so it’s a song you can really get into and sing calmly.
I often point out Ken Hirai’s singing characteristics to my students, so please use them as a reference! First, while it’s memorable that he sings with his eyes closed, in reality, closing your eyes can cause unnecessary tension and make it harder to stay on pitch.
However, Hirai raises his eyebrows and uses his hand to track the pitch while he sings.
He compensates in other ways so that singing becomes more natural and easier.
This gesture also makes it much easier to produce falsetto, so definitely give it a try!
