Practice songs and reference tracks for mixed voice (for men)
The term “mixed voice.”
You’ve probably heard this word at least once.
If you’ve found your way to this article, chances are many of you regularly think, “I really want to master mixed voice!!”
In fact, a great number of the students who come to my vocal training lessons tell me, “I want to be able to use mixed voice.”
Now, explaining what mixed voice actually is in terms of vocal technique could fill an entire book, so here I’ll follow the common understanding and define it as “a voice quality that sits between chest voice and falsetto (head voice).” Once you’ve learned mixed voice, you can subtly control the blend of chest and head elements—adjusting their ratio—to achieve a wide variety of vocal expressions, and you’ll also expand the range of songs you can sing.
In this article, I’ve gathered songs that should help you acquire mixed voice—a technique that can be considered essential for singing modern music.
Within the brief introductions to each song, I’ve included some simple “tips for singing,” so please use them as a reference and incorporate them into your daily vocal practice.

FUN! FUN! FUN!GENIC

GENIC is a co-ed dance and vocal group that many expect to be the next AAA.
Among their songs, the one I especially recommend is FUN! FUN! FUN! In this track, a mixed voice appears right before the chorus.
It’s not just any mixed voice—it leans quite close to falsetto—so it’s a great practice song for those who want to raise the upper limit of the high notes they can hit in chest voice.
Definitely give it a listen.
For Your EntertainmentAdam Lambert

Adam Lambert is an artist with one of the world’s leading high-tone voices.
His mixed voice is so exceptional that it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say he ranks among the top five globally, and he’s also known as the second lead vocalist of the legendary band Queen.
Among Adam Lambert’s songs, the one I especially recommend is For Your Entertainment.
The mixed voice in the chorus is stunning, but the truly incredible part is the transition from the bridge to the final chorus.
He delivers a thick, shout-infused mixed voice that’s virtually unattainable for most Japanese singers.
It’s a difficult song, so very few people can sing it, but if you want a genuine reference for mixed voice, this is definitely a track you should listen to.

SubtitleOfficial HIGE DANDism

This song gives the impression of a moving, listenable ballad.
To sing it with a beautiful, breathy tone like vocalist Fujiwara’s, lung capacity, diaphragmatic breathing, and bodily awareness are all important.
You might think, “There’s so much to keep in mind…,” but don’t worry! First, when you sing, make sure to really listen to the backing drums.
If you sing in sync with the drum accents, it becomes easier to keep the rhythm and to hit the high notes.
By the way, even my female students struggled with this song, saying, “It’s so high!”—I think the key is how you produce the sound.
If you sing with the image of resonating in the back of your head, the overall feel becomes softer, bringing you closer to Fujiwara’s gentle tone.
There are also soaring long tones, so try finding the placement where you can produce them comfortably and sing from there.
RocksJAM Project

JAM Project is a vocal group that has earned high acclaim worldwide for their musical style, which adapts Japanese anime songs into hard rock, and for their overwhelming performances.
The group includes famous anisong singers such as Hironobu Kageyama and Masaaki Endoh.
Among their songs, the one I particularly recommend as a reference for mixed voice is “Rocks.” In the opening, Masaaki Endoh’s mixed voice isn’t just high; it has substantial thickness and body.
Their sheer vocal technique is also worth studying, so be sure to check it out.
Starlight ParadeSEKAI NO OWARI

SEKAI NO OWARI (aka SekaOwa) released their second major-label single in November 2011.
When you sing, try to mix in plenty of breath to soften the attack of your voice.
If you tighten your throat and squeeze the breath, it will sound strained, so keep your throat as open as possible and support your upper body firmly with your abdominal muscles as you phonate.
I think this makes for excellent mixed-voice practice!
single-minded; wholehearted; devoted; earnestKing Gnu

This is King Gnu’s fourth single, released on December 29, 2021.
It serves as the theme song for the anime film JUJUTSU KAISEN 0: The Movie.
Mixed voice, as the name suggests, is a tone produced in the middle between chest voice and falsetto; because of that, it allows for a wide range of expression.
In this track, you can hear a chest-leaning mixed voice in the pre-chorus and a falsetto-leaning mixed voice in the chorus.
Be sure to listen closely and study the differences in vocal nuance.
Since it’s a fast-tempo song, being able to switch your vocal production quickly and smoothly will be a key point in mastering it.
Kanata HarukaRADWIMPS

This is RADWIMPS’ 12th digital-only single, released in October 2022.
It was created for director Makoto Shinkai’s film “Suzume.” It’s a slow ballad that makes highly effective use of string arrangements, and it lets you fully enjoy vocalist Yojiro Noda’s gentle yet powerful singing, which skillfully employs his soft mixed voice.
I also think it’s extremely useful as a practice piece for developing mixed voice.
Try practicing by opening the back of your throat as much as possible, and aim to send the sound from your mouth toward both nostrils.
It should definitely help you master mixed voice.
