Practice songs and reference tracks for mixed voice (for men)

The term “mixed voice.”

You’ve probably heard this word at least once.

If you’ve found your way to this article, chances are many of you regularly think, “I really want to master mixed voice!!”

In fact, a great number of the students who come to my vocal training lessons tell me, “I want to be able to use mixed voice.”

Now, explaining what mixed voice actually is in terms of vocal technique could fill an entire book, so here I’ll follow the common understanding and define it as “a voice quality that sits between chest voice and falsetto (head voice).” Once you’ve learned mixed voice, you can subtly control the blend of chest and head elements—adjusting their ratio—to achieve a wide variety of vocal expressions, and you’ll also expand the range of songs you can sing.

In this article, I’ve gathered songs that should help you acquire mixed voice—a technique that can be considered essential for singing modern music.

Within the brief introductions to each song, I’ve included some simple “tips for singing,” so please use them as a reference and incorporate them into your daily vocal practice.

[For Men] Mix Voice Practice Songs, Helpful Reference Tracks (41–50)

MapleSpitz

This is Spitz’s 19th single, released in July 1998.

In this song, you can enjoy a relatively falsetto-leaning, gentle mixed voice.

If you keep your throat open and sing softly, letting the sound resonate through your nose, you should be able to hit the high notes cleanly! Be careful not to sing by straining your throat or forcing your voice.

Nana-iro BUMP OF CHICKEN

A single by BUMP OF CHICKEN, released digitally on May 18, 2021 and later as a CD single on December 22 of the same year.

It served as the theme song for the NHK morning drama series “Okaeri Mone.” BUMP OF CHICKEN’s vocalist, Mr.

Fujiwara, has an exceptionally transparent tone even when singing in chest voice, which makes it difficult to determine exactly which parts of this song are sung in mixed voice.

In that sense, it may be a fairly advanced choice as a practice piece for mixed voice.

It’s likely that the higher notes in the A section are sung with mixed voice, so try focusing on that area when listening.

It should be easier to tell if you compare those phrases with the similarly high but more powerful chest-voice notes in the chorus.

When you actually sing it yourself, be careful to avoid letting the high notes stick out too prominently.

M87Kenshi Yonezu

Kenshi Yonezu’s 12th CD single, released in May 2022.

As many of you may guess from the title, it was created as the theme song for the film Shin Ultraman.

For those familiar with classic “Ultraman songs,” this track has a surprisingly mature mood.

A major factor in crafting that sense of maturity is Yonezu’s vocal delivery, which skillfully switches between chest voice, mixed voice, and falsetto.

On first listen, it seems he makes extensive use of mixed voice in the relatively gentle passages, such as the A section.

Try singing by letting the sound gently resonate toward the upper palate as much as possible; it should be great practice for developing your mixed voice.

Of course, aim for smooth transitions between chest voice and falsetto in the high-tone sections like the chorus as well.

Be careful not to sing with a tight throat—doing so not only ruins the song’s atmosphere but can also strain your vocal cords.

Kaiju no Hanauta Vaundy

This is a digital-only single by singer-songwriter Vaundy, released in May 2020.

It was issued as a pre-release single from his first album, “strobo.” The song has a rather striking title, doesn’t it? Contrary to the impression the title might give, the track itself is a very orthodox, up-tempo pop song, showcasing Vaundy’s clear, soaring high tones over the backing track.

The vocal melody frequently uses a relatively high range, so I think it’s also a good recommendation for higher-voiced male singers to try at karaoke.

To sing it well, it’s important not to lose the sense of tempo and groove, so make sure you feel the beat solidly and be careful to keep the rhythm from becoming flat as you sing.

Pale Blue Kenshi Yonezu

This is Kenshi Yonezu’s 11th CD single, released on June 16, 2021.

It was selected as the theme song for the TBS Friday drama Rikokatsu.

As for Kenshi Yonezu, the singer of this track, he’s well-known for his skillful use of mixed voice to create gentle high notes, and that strength is fully on display here.

Especially in the A-melody sections, you can fully appreciate the charm of his vocals.

If you compare those parts with the high notes sung in chest voice during the chorus, it becomes even clearer, and I think it will deepen your understanding as you work to master mixed voice yourself.

It’s Mr.

Children’s 18th single, released in January 2000.

When singing this song, whether you can use mixed voice for the B melody and the chorus will be a major key point.

If you try to keep it in chest voice as the pitch gradually rises, your voice will definitely crack (lol).

Try singing without squeezing your throat, firmly supporting your upper body with your abdominal muscles, and aim the sound at the hard palate so it resonates through the nasal cavity.

horizonback number

This is back number’s fourth digital download-only single, released in August 2021.

It was reportedly written for high school students who had been aiming for the 2020 Inter-High School Championships, which were canceled due to the impact of COVID-19.

As for the mixed voice in this track, it only appears briefly in the high notes of the chorus and isn’t used extensively.

However, by singing this part not with a strong, chesty high tone but with a soft mixed voice, it seems to further emphasize the song’s gentle atmosphere.

It’s a great example of how to use mixed voice effectively.

Be sure to practice so that this section doesn’t become harsh or rough.
