Practice songs and reference tracks for mixed voice (for men)

The term “mixed voice.”

You’ve probably heard this word at least once.

If you’ve found your way to this article, chances are many of you regularly think, “I really want to master mixed voice!!”

In fact, a great number of the students who come to my vocal training lessons tell me, “I want to be able to use mixed voice.”

Now, explaining what mixed voice actually is in terms of vocal technique could fill an entire book, so here I’ll follow the common understanding and define it as “a voice quality that sits between chest voice and falsetto (head voice).” Once you’ve learned mixed voice, you can subtly control the blend of chest and head elements—adjusting their ratio—to achieve a wide variety of vocal expressions, and you’ll also expand the range of songs you can sing.

In this article, I’ve gathered songs that should help you acquire mixed voice—a technique that can be considered essential for singing modern music.

Within the brief introductions to each song, I’ve included some simple “tips for singing,” so please use them as a reference and incorporate them into your daily vocal practice.

[For Men] Mixed Voice Practice Songs, Recommended Tracks (21–30)

BREAKOUTSnow Man

Snow Man is a nine-member boy group that has gained popularity for its acrobatic dance and vocal technique that can go toe-to-toe with K-pop.

Among their many songs that make frequent use of high-tone vocals, the one I especially recommend as a reference for mixed voice is BREAKOUT.

While mixed voice doesn’t appear throughout the entire track, it does appear twice in the chorus.

It’s also a song that tends to be well-received by women, so be sure to master it.

Currently, the Japanese rock band ONE OK ROCK is earning high acclaim overseas as well.

Their style, which weaves a high-tone voice into orthodox rock, is extremely catchy and powerful.

Among their songs, the one I especially recommend as a reference for mixed voice is Make It Out Alive.

In this piece, the chorus features a mixed voice enhanced with the band’s signature shouts—the true essence of ONE OK ROCK.

It’s also likely to help improve basic vocal skills, making it an ideal choice for a practice piece.

It’s Fujii Kaze’s eighth single overall, released on May 3, 2021.

Even though “mixed voice” can be used in various ways depending on the singer, Fujii’s mixed voice in this song is falsetto-based.

To sing this song well, you first need to be able to switch smoothly between chest voice and falsetto.

As you practice those “register transitions,” you’ll naturally start to grasp how to use mixed voice.

Begin by practicing phonation without tensing your throat.

Among the visual kei bands that debuted in the late 2010s, Kizu stands out for their overwhelming prowess.

Vocalist Lime, known for his mastery of high tones, is highly acclaimed in the industry for his singing ability.

Among their songs, the one I especially recommend as a reference for mixed voice is Jigoku (Hell).

The breathtaking mixed voice that appears repeatedly while maintaining richness makes it one of the most difficult pieces among the songs introduced here.

It’s more of a reference track than a practice assignment.

Shot In The DarkBOWWOW

VOW WOW is a band boasting the highest level of polish in Japan’s rock scene.

Their brand of hard rock—both instrumentally and vocally—meets world-class standards, earning high praise from dedicated rock aficionados at home and abroad.

Among their songs, the one I particularly recommend as a reference for mixed voice is Shot In The Dark.

The mixed voice, which interweaves shouts while maintaining thickness, is extremely rare among Japanese singers.

If you want to master a genuine mixed voice, be sure to study vocalist Genki Hitomi’s technique.

TVXQ, the group that ignited the K-pop boom in Japan.

For men in their late 20s to early 30s, they’re probably a nostalgic group with special memories.

Among their songs, the one I especially recommend is “IT’S TRUE IT’S HERE.” Although a mixed voice appears only once—in the final chorus—you can sing the other falsetto parts in mixed voice as well, making it a perfect piece for practice.

Be sure to check it out.

KanadeSukima Switch

Kanade Sukima Switch

It’s Sukima Switch’s second single, released in March 2004.

Sukima Switch is an excellent choice if you want to enjoy male vocals that make effective use of mixed voice.

The overall range used in the song doesn’t go that high, but if you try to sing the whole piece with the mixed-voice technique of “placing the sound in the nasal cavity,” you should be able to deliver a soft tone close to the feel of the original.

Please give it a try if you like.

After the final key change, you’ll also need a stronger, chest-leaning mixed voice, but be careful not to tighten your throat as much as possible.
