[Recommended] Short, easy-to-sing Japanese karaoke songs

I think there are quite a few people who aren’t good with karaoke, but sometimes you just can’t turn it down because of social obligations.

What’s more, there may be situations where, once you go, you can’t get away without singing at least one song.

So, I’m going to introduce some short songs that are easy to sing even for those who aren’t comfortable with karaoke!

Most of the songs I’m about to introduce are a little over three minutes long, but some are around two minutes.

Long songs can be tough for people who aren’t confident about singing, but you might be able to manage a short one!

Also, feel free to use this as a reference when choosing the final song as your room time is about to run out.

Everyone is free.Half time Old

This song, which you’ve probably heard in an au commercial, is performed by the rock band Half time Old.

It runs about 2 minutes and 45 seconds—under three minutes—so it’s great when you’re short on time, and it’s also recommended for people who aren’t comfortable singing longer songs.

In addition to its exposure in the commercial, it’s based on an arrangement of the well-known world music piece “The Entertainer,” giving it high recognition.

I think it’s an easy, approachable song that even those who aren’t confident singers can pick up and sing right away.

"Super-Dimensional Diner Nyan-Nyan" Commercial Song — Ranka Lee

This is the commercial song for ‘Chou Jikuu Hanten Nyan-Nyan,’ sung by Ranka Lee from the popular anime Macross Frontier.

Since it’s a CM song, it’s just a single phrase of about 20 seconds.

It’s available in karaoke, so it seems perfect for people who aren’t comfortable with long songs or when you only have a little time left but want to sing one more track.

After the rainWANIMA

The three-piece rock band WANIMA captivates listeners with straightforward, heartfelt lyrics and harmonies and sounds characteristic of melodic hardcore.

This track, included on their debut mini-album “Can Not Behaved!!,” is under two minutes long but packed with WANIMA’s charm, making it a number that pumps you up.

The tempo is fast, but since most of the melody itself is laid-back, even those who aren’t confident at karaoke should be able to handle it as long as they stay on the beat.

If it still feels tough, try belting it out without worrying about pitch at first—the song’s energy will get the crowd going.

Why not give it a shot?

At the End of SorrowElephant Kashimashi

Here’s the classic “At the End of Sorrow” by Elephant Kashimashi, the leading lights of poignant, literary rock.

It’s a two-and-a-half-minute burst of soul that kicks off straight away with an emotional chorus.

If you’re singing it at karaoke, watch out for the high notes in the chorus—stay relaxed and ride the song’s momentum as you go on the offensive.

In the instrumental break, a weeping guitar lifts the mood.

The lyrics are cool and the kind that hit you later, so it suits a direct, emotional delivery that doesn’t distort the meaning of the words.

LILLYHump Back

LILLYHump Back

This is a song by Hump Back, a band steadily gaining popularity in the Japanese rock scene as a next-generation girls’ rock band.

The runtime is about two minutes, and it really ends in the blink of an eye.

But precisely because of that, there are no unnecessary arrangements—the performance by the instrumentalists and the vocals of guitarist Momoko Hayashi come through directly.

This song’s straightforward message is incredibly appealing.

While the lyrics might make it feel like a love song, it’s actually said to be a song about a dog that Momoko Hayashi used to have!

Into the Dream by Yosui Inoue

With a singing voice, musical style, and overall presence that radiate a one-of-a-kind individuality, folk singer Yosui Inoue has created many hit songs, including those he has written for other artists.

This track—one of Inoue’s signature songs—was used as the theme song for the 1973 film “After School” and is also famous for having been covered by many artists.

It’s so well-known that you can recognize it from the opening guitar phrase alone, making it a guaranteed crowd-pleaser at karaoke with any group.

Plus, at under three minutes long and with relatively few melodies to memorize, it’s a great choice even for people who aren’t confident at karaoke.

Don't appear in my dreams.I won't forget

Don’t show up in my dreams—I can’t forget you.

The band Wasureranneyo has gained popularity for their musical style that mixes approachable pop music with punk rock.

They originally started as a band, but after the other members left, it has been active as vocalist Shibata’s solo project.

Among Wasureranneyo’s works, a short track I especially recommend is Yume ni Dete Kunnna (“Don’t Show Up in My Dreams”).

It’s crafted as classic punk rock, making it easy to sing throughout.

There aren’t any harsh shouting parts, so I think it’s approachable for women to try as well.
