StyleMiisa Shimizu

Misa Shimizu is a female singer-songwriter renowned for her powerful vocals.
Half Filipino and half Japanese, she grew up listening primarily to Western R&B from a young age.
Her songs showcase a soulful voice influenced by Black music.
Among her works, the one I especially recommend is “Style.” Not only is the whistle register showcased in the intro and interlude extremely challenging, but the frequent ad-libs throughout also boast a high level of difficulty.

My sincere heartAina the End

Aina the End is a singer known for her distinctive husky voice.
After her activities with BiSH, she has earned high acclaim from both the industry and listeners as a solo artist.
This work is fundamentally set in a waltz-like triple meter reminiscent of soul music.
This rhythm is famously difficult for Japanese people.
On top of that, the song contains many long sustained notes, so you can’t rely on speed to cover any weaknesses.
Considering all of this, it’s fair to say the piece is highly challenging and demands solid fundamental vocal technique and a strong sense of rhythm.
Tot MusicaAdo

Ado’s masterpiece “Tot Musica.” This work is crafted as a hard rock track with elements reminiscent of gothic rock and gothic metal, and it makes extensive use of full-fledged shouts in the chorus.
As was the case with early Ado herself, forced shouting can sound contrived.
Therefore, to perform this song well, you need to master shouts that arise naturally as an extension of a powerful voice, like Ado’s current style.
If you can produce natural shouts, definitely give it a try.
No.5LANA

LANA is a figure who epitomizes the contemporary R&B scene in Japan.
With her blessed husky voice and powerful vocal ability, she’s gained nationwide popularity with tracks that resonate with gyaru across Japan and B-girls alike.
Among her songs, the one I especially want to recommend is No.
5.
This track leans particularly heavily into hip-hop, featuring plenty of sharp punchlines.
The hook feels like R&B with a strong pop flavor, striking a perfect balance between cute and cool.
BiscuitCHANMINA

Chanmina’s new song “Biscuit.” This track leaves a strong impression with a sound that feels like a mix of the UK’s popular R&B and dance-pop.
Overall, it has a downcast vibe, which might actually make it feel easier to sing.
However, the tricky part comes near the end.
In the C-section right before the final chorus, you have to sustain shouts while hitting quite high notes and holding long tones.
Without considerable vocal ability, this section is hard to pull off—but if you can clear it, the rest is easy.
Give it a try!
Living My Lifemilet

This is milet’s 10th digital-only single, released in July 2023.
It was chosen as the theme song for the Monday 10 PM drama “The Job-Changing Devil.” The slightly languid vibe makes it a very pleasant listen.
As for milet’s vocals here, I was impressed by how she maintains a solid sense of groove even within that languid feel, and by her deft switch in vocal production when singing the highly leaping phrases near the end of the B section.
If you can fully recreate this in karaoke, you’ll definitely draw attention.
First, make sure you clearly understand where the rests fall in the song; mastering how to use them is the key to making it sound really good.
ChangeAtarashii Gakko no Leaders

The new hit tune “Change” by ATARASHII GAKKO!.
They’re known for a sound that blends hip-hop with the flavor of Japanese kayōkyoku, and this track leans especially hard into hip-hop compared to their other works.
It’s not an insanely complex rap, but it does demand a naturally low vocal register and strong projection in the lower range, making it more challenging than it sounds.
If you’re good at rapping, definitely give it a try.
