Karaoke songs that are easy and fun for high school students to sing

Compared to today’s songs, older tracks didn’t pack in as many words.

Because of that, many of them were, on the surface, easier to sing than modern songs.

That doesn’t mean today’s songs are necessarily harder, though.

Since recent songs tend to cram in more words, it’s actually easier to disguise flaws, so depending on the track, some can be quite easy for anyone to sing well.

This time, I’ve picked out songs from that category that I especially recommend for high school students.

We’ll be featuring the latest tracks, so be sure to check it out to the end!

Gold ~Until the Day We Meet Again~ Utada Hikaru

Hikaru Utada is a female singer-songwriter who has remained at the forefront of the music scene from the late 1990s to today.

Even among high school students from a different generation, many people know her.

Among her songs, the one I especially recommend is Gold ~Mata Au Hi Made~.

This piece has a calm overall tone, and the vocal line doesn’t require long sustained notes or powerful projection, making it easy to sing.

It’s also suitable for women who struggle with high notes, so it’s a must-listen for high school girls.

Best FriendKiroro

Kiroro’s “Best Friend” has long been sung and cherished as a graduation and friendship song.

It became a major hit as the theme song for the NHK morning drama series “Churasan,” and is well known across generations.

With its relaxed tempo and conversational singing style, it’s likely easy to sing even for those who feel karaoke isn’t their strong suit.

It’s also a great choice to perform as a message song for friends who are about to graduate and go their separate ways—sure to become a treasured memory.

dogwood (flowering dogwood)Yo Hitoto

Released in 2004, this signature song by Yo Hitoto is also well known for being covered by actress Yui Aragaki.

In 2010, a film themed around this song was released.

It also drew attention for ranking among the most-sung karaoke songs of the Heisei era.

A beloved classic across generations, it’s a song that can be sung by anyone, regardless of gender.

Fortune Cookie in LoveAKB48

Fortune Cookie in Love AKB48

Released on August 21, 2013 as AKB48’s 32nd major single.

The center position for the song was Rino Sashihara.

This is such a massive hit that anyone living in Japan has surely heard at least the chorus melody.

With an easy-to-sing, memorable hook and impactful lyrics, it’s crafted like the model example of an idol song—yet it never feels cheap, which is nothing short of “as expected!!!.” There’s no need to overthink singing this one (lol).

Sing it with your friends and have a blast.

Just be careful: if you push the groove too aggressively, you might break the song’s vibe.

It’s better to keep a broader, slightly laid-back feel—leaning toward a backbeat rather than rushing ahead.

And of course, don’t forget to copy the choreography!

In conclusion

As I mentioned at the beginning, I picked songs that you can sing comfortably without worrying about the little details—how was it? Were there any songs you felt like singing? It might sound odd coming from someone like me who usually teaches and directs singing, but you don’t need to worry about how good you are; just raising your voice energetically and comfortably can make you feel better.

I hope these selected songs serve as a reference and help you all feel energized through singing!
